Pre-race routine:

Arrived at the hotel the day before, got my packet and went to dinner with my group. I woke up at 4am and thought, “am I crazy” and went back to bed until 4:30. Got up had my usually PB sandwich, banana and PowerAde then carpooled to the race and got there about 5:30am.

Event warmup:

Walking around. I figured a slow start would be warming up enough and it was.

Comments:

First time running this race. My running group, the STARS (She Trains And Runs Strong) were out in full force for the HM race except one (coach) doing the full marathon.

I originally had a 3 hour goal but it was already warm so I decided that I will take it easy, not push it until the end and enjoy the race. I just wanted to pass Wal-Mart (mile 9.75) before the 9:05 cut off time. It was hot and humid (low 70s) from the 6:30 start and as I was shuffling along, I couldn’t believe how many people out there were in their LONG SLEEVE race shirt in this heat. The course was great with not too many steep inclines (minor hills) along the way that wind through downtown and historic Frederick and into the outer neighborhoods and a big hill at the end. At every other water stop, if I wasn’t drinking water, I was pouring it on my face. Some of the course spectators were great to have hoses spraying water out on the runners to help cool us down. It was awesome. One lady even had her bathroom available and put up a sign.

What would you do differently?:

Slightly less drinking at the aid stations.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a lot, stretch and more stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and humidity.

Event comments:

If the weather was better, I am sure I would have hit, if not beat my 3 hour goal. Despite the hot weather, I enjoyed the race and actually liked the 6:30am start. Great organization, easy parking and race small enough not to feel overly congested or crowded at the beginning or finish area.

I tried pushing it at the end but didn’t make it with the heat. I didn’t meet my 3 hour goal but I did pass Wal-Mart with 30 minutes to spare and I beat my last half marathon time by 18 minutes!! Well 18:47 to be exact.
