Swim
Comments: At 7AM (elite start) the ocean was relatively calm - but by 8:25 (my wave), the wind had picked up and it was pretty rough again. Tough going out to first turn. After the turn, the waves tried to push you back toward the beach, so you had to work harder to keep your line. After the last turn, it was easier with the waves, but the waves were rolling so much it was difficult to see. I felt pretty good overall, since this was my first ocean swim and I was terrified before getting in. What would you do differently?: Start out a litte harder Transition 1
Comments: Not a great transition for me. I was a little dazed and queezy getting out of the water, so I took a little extra time. Gargled with a little extra water before getting on the bike. What would you do differently?: Take off my watch before getting out of the full suit, so it didn't get stuck. I had no issues, of course, when I practiced earlier... Bike
Comments: Got my pace up fairly high for several long stretches (17-20 mph), but the headwinds really messed with me and I also ended up 13-14 mph for stretches. I am fairly happy with this overall - since this is still a big improvement over last year. Transition 2
Comments: Slower than normal T2 - couldn't get my bike racked with wetsuit where it was. Took me a second to grab what I needed, although it was laid out correctly. What would you do differently?: Grabbed my race belt and hat and started running, instead of standing there to put it on. Run
Comments: Realized that I REALLY had to go to the bathroom as soon as I left transition. I figured there would be a port-a-potty at the first aid station - there wasn't. Felt crappy after the first .5 miles - side stitch that wouldn't go away. Quads started cramping up a little - I walked A LOT! I was frustrated with all the progress I made this winter with my speed, I wasn't even running!!! Found some nice people to run/walk with, anyway What would you do differently?: Gone to the bathroom sooner. Run!!! Post race
Warm down: Got the cold towel and wiped off. Sat down and stretched my legs and arms. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not sure - drank too much sea water, not enough water on bike, not enough electrolytes, didn't go to bathroom early enough... Need to figure out what happened on the run and correct it for next time. Event comments: I liked this race overall - not sure if I'll do it next year or not, but I am considering it. Kirk heard a few people say the ocean was the worst conditions for any St Anthony's race, so I guess if I can do that, I could do it again. Based on this race - I'm not sure if I'm going to do a half-iron this year. I'm going to register for the next couple of olympics on my schedule and see how I feel in July. I don't want to push things too far and not enjoy this sport. Last updated: 2005-11-16 12:00 AM

Got up at 5AM, showered, ate bagel with peanut butter, sipped on powerade. Got to transition area around 6:15 to set-up (transition closed at 7AM), had Kirk bodymark me using my sharpie, set-up my transition, and headed over to swim start.
No warm-up - I was nervous enough about the ocean swim with the rough seas, I didn't want to make it worse.
