Run
Comments: Felt good, running a little fast but felt good. Hitting 6:30 pace. Footing wasn't great, but no deep snow and no hard packed ice. About half packed snow and half cleared pavement. Felt good at 8k station. Had some pretzels and carried on. I was running with my fuel belt and had only had 2 of my drinks by then so thought I would be good. Was good. Had to take a killer leak though and also #2, but carried on and had no real ill effects. Got to the porta potty at 18k just in time. First year they had it there and thank god. Not really on sturdy ground but did the trick, don't even think I spent to much time there. Felt good, filled up my bottles with ultima (I had protein powered and peach crystals in them) grabbed some chocolate pretzels and off. Felt really good, started seeing the people on the return, they were flying. High fived everyone. Couple guys gave me the cold soldier, grumpy Gusses. Was flying, high fiving people really helped me go, my pace quickened. It was really good. Felt awesome after 25 k. hit it at about 2:50. High fived a coupled of the people behind me as I headed back. Felt really good, passed a guy. Kept it going more or less until 32 k. Loaded up on Ultima and had a bunch of PB & J wraps. Hit the wall right then. BAD. Was not pretty after that. A lot of shuffling and walking, very little running. Pace fell dramatically to 8 and then 9-10 min km and I just couldn't get it back. Happens every year. Maybe I did not eat enough, last year I didn't drink enough, got enough water and electrolytes, maybe just not enough sugar. Absolutely brutal between 42-50 k. Horrible. Last 8 k took me 77. Funny, since lat year only took me 65 minutes for the last 8 k. minutes. If someone was there to pick me up I am not sure I would have had the will to go on. You start thinking some mighty weird things at that point I tell you that. PB by 17 minutes, so that was good. Then the finish, which was awesome. It is so funny, you are in extreme pain and then, flash, it is over. What would you do differently?: not sure, need to train more, lose some more weight. I felt really good at my last training run on January 31. Did 27 k in 3 hours. Felt that gave me 3 hours to do 22 k which I felt good about. Took me about 3:05 to do the 27 k today. Probably mostly because of a bathroom break at 18 k. Then the last 22.5 k took 3:14. lol, wow. I probably should try to hit goal pace right off the start. I wanted 6 hours, so that is like 7:10, but I started at 6:30 and then just fell apart the last 22k. Post race
Warm down: moaned and groaned. Lots of pizza, lots of pop. This year they gave $50 gift cards to the last 3 finishers. Figures, past 2 years I was second last and 3 last and no gift cards. Out of the money this year. lol What limited your ability to perform faster: weight. I think my 2 week taper where I ran a total of 6 days and 35k in the first 14 days of February and went to an all inclusive in Mexico from Feb 1-8 was poorly advised from the standpoint of race prep. Although, don't regret the holiday one bit. Should have had some gels, I think that would have helped, not sure what I was thinking. Event comments: Awesome race. I suggest it to everyone, they do a 25 k too. Lots of food, lots of support. Lots of guys/gals there you know are just using it as a training run for a summer of ultra racing, they are buff.
