Swim
Comments: Got kicked, googles knocked off three times, and had a blast. Did not let anything bother me. I think a few people got so angry out there that is really slowed them down. Just focused on my breathing and form and everything went well. Gu half way with no stomach problems. What would you do differently?: I would probably not worry so much about running out of energy, a little more effort to get into good lines might have worked out well. Transition 1
Comments: Wow, that is a long transition. I rushed through it and it still took me 8 mins. I rushed so much that I forgot to grab my Endurolytes out of the bag. Next time I will have to remember everything in my bag or attach them to my bike. This could have prevented the few cramps I had on the bike and also on the run. Blood sugar was great comming out of the swim!!! finally my nerves where down and my body was responding normally to insulin again. What would you do differently?: Take 10 secs to make sure I had everything. Bike
Comments: Started fast with everyone else (we all were so pumps to get out on the bike). Found a guy riding by power and felt comfotable with his pace so I kept with him for the first 30 miles then passed him. 30 mile in my bg was a little high (nutrition was working so I gave a small bolus). Three hours later gb started to drop and so did my power, but was able to eat myself out of it. Reduced basal rate to 20% for last hour and eat everything available to get ready for the run, but kept my fluids to 20 oz per hour to make sure my stomach was still emptying properly. What would you do differently?: reduce basal sooner, train more on the bike (weakest sport). Transition 2
Comments: Good transition with elastic laces. Put my lube between my legs and got slathered with sunscreen and I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Sun was good, just kept going. Had to reduce my basal to 5% of normal just to stay above 100. Eat some carb at every aid station and a gel at every other. the cool sponges are a life saver. Ran into Lisa around mile 14, wanted to talk but my legs could not slow down (my internal metronome was program and if I slowed down I don't think I would start back you again, have to love that reticular formation ;) ). Started to get cramps in random muscles throughout the run. Once I reach out to give lisa a high 5 and my entire left abductor compartment cramped, but it slowly released over the next half mile. The finish line was amazing, enough said. I was a little mad for taking it so easy on the bike, but I ended up passing over 300 people during the marathon so maybe it worked out. First Marathon!!!! longest training run was only 17 miles! I now believe that running consistanly throughout the week is more important than one long run for Iornman training. What would you do differently?: Smile more. Post race
Warm down: Two people caught me, then I walked to the food tent and eat for about 15 mins. Walked with my father to our truck and when to the hotel. What limited your ability to perform faster: Two bgs were close to being low. Event comments: Fans where amazing. On one hill I did a wheelie for some fans that then erupted with cow bell and applause. Got a cramp from doing the wheelie on that crazy steep hill, but it the energy I received back from the crowd greatly overshadowed it. Next Ironman!! Two or Three years I think. 4 hours to start eat 50g carbs of steel cut oat with brown sugar and cinn. 1 large banana, 2 tbls of peanut butter, and 8oz of Silk chocolate milk. Bolused to extra units to cover sports drink 2 hours from start.
Checked bike and then relaxed. Checked BG 6 times before race, was stable but high due to nerves (little epinephrine I am guessing ;) ). Right before swim start had a Gu (25g carb).
No warm up / Walk to swim start.
