Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am for the 1.5 hr drive. Rode with my training buddy, Sam who gets us pulled over halfway to Minneapolis. Fortunately only a warning, but slowed us down by at least 25 minutes. Arrived about 6:15 (much too late for my liking) and went crazy trying to get everything set up. I like this race venue and really enjoyed the new bike course, but the transition area is just terrible as far as I'm concerned. Just too tight and only some of the racks are in any order. Finally got my wetsuit on 10 minutes before the start for a very short swim. Never had the chance to stretch.

Breakfast was the usual cup of coffee, banana, and bagel.
Event warmup:

Very short (for me) swim w/u. Would have preferred to have had had the time to get in a run with some stretching. Last time Sam drives!

In the rush to set up, I screwed up my Garmin HR so all of my timing data was off - at least the HR was accurate.
Swim
  • 32m 12s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Relatively good swim - hard to draft as the water was pretty murky. Started in Wave 10, so I had to swim through lots of groups. Sighting out of the water was good.
What would you do differently?:

Talk my way into an earlier Wave - wouldn't have been slowed down by the earlier waves :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Uneventful, except that I didn't velcro down my shoes tight enough - led to blister on the ride.
Bike
  • 2h 44m 46s

Comments:

A good ride for me. As always, my weakest leg, but I think that it led to a great run. Took in 1/3 bottle of water in the first 20 minutes, then ate 3 mojos, 1 caramel sweet and salty bar (melted), 1 powerbar endurance drink, and 1 G/E (from the course). Lost my Gu flask somewhere on a downhill. Last mojo was about 20 min from T2 - may have led to some stomach bloating on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat so close to T2.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

No issues.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 45m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

A good run - little bloated early on so I couldn't take more than one gel during the run. Brought a flask with four gels in it, but with alternating gatorade and water during most of the run, I didn't need any extra energy, thankfully. Having ice to put in the jersey and shorts was awesome. I think that really helped - thanks to the RD for that!
Post race
Warm down:

Stood around and stretched - drank some coke and water - short walk in the lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Didn't taper for this one - I only rode 30 miles with a two mile run the day before, but trying to keep focused on IMOO. I think a taper would have helped - may make this a A priority race next year so training will be specific to it.

Event comments:

Only complaints were that the racks in transition are too tight and the aid stations on the bike. Was advertised as having stations at mile 29 and something like 45, but the first was at mile 20 - not even sure when the second one came along. Problem is trying to determine when/how much to drink based on the course and what I carry. I just like having an accurate plan for nutrition!

Course: Great course - first 30 miles were flat with a few hills, but the road conditions were very good - nice and smooth. Loved the hills. Training for IMOO, I've been trying to his as many hills in training, as possible. I think I tackled the two largest climbs pretty well. A nice scenic ride, as well. Overall, much more enjoyable this year when compared to last year's ride.
