Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15AM. Ate a Cliff Builder bar, drank 1/4 cup of coffee, drove to race. Traffic was bad getting to parking, so I ended up starting much farther back than I wanted to.
Event warmup:

None.

  • 13.1 miles

Comments:

I picked a bad race to start back into distance running. The crowd was unorganized. There were too many people in the wrong starting place and I started off too slow. Was shooting for 9 min ave mile but blew my chances of that in the first 6 miles due to stop and go. Miles 6-13 were great and with negative splits. I should have shed the long sleeve shirt sooner than mile 8, but was worried about getting too cold. When I did shed it, I realized that it was completely soaked in sweat. Waited too long.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the house earlier. I did not expect such a large crowd and spent too much time in traffic, which resulted in starting with the 10:30 pacers, which were a mix of 10:30 to 13:00 pacers.
Post race
Warm down:

I was very cold after the race. I walked around waiting for Jennifer to finish and tried to stay warm. Ate everything that I could get (banana, fruit/protein smoothie)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad starting position. I could have trained more.

Event comments:

Start should have been better organized.

Performance: Below average
It was hard to track the miles. Since it was so dark, I missed a lot of the mile markers, so my splits were all messed up. First and second mile were much longer than I wanted them to be. The crowd of runners were bottle-necked getting over the bridge, and we all ended up walking. I REALLY WISH people would start in their pace groups.
Course: Very flat. Two small bridges. Mostly pavement, with concrete on Bayshore Blvd.
