Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am, shower, ate banana, make breakfast, rack bike, wake up family on the road at 5:10AM. Ate Eggwhite Sandwich at 6am. Got onsight at 6:50AM, into transition around 7:10AM. Ate 1/2 Cliffbar while setting up transition. Felt rushed setting up, would have liked to get there earlier. Had to make time to drop off the kids. Tore my wetsuit while rushing to get down to the start to get in a little warm up swim.
Event warmup:

Not much to speak of. Jogged around the parking lot to test the knee, amazingly enough, it gave me zero problems. Biked over to transition and swam maybe 100 yards as warmup, more so to get used to the water temp and loosen up my obviously very dried out, and now torn, wetsuit.
Swim
  • 27m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crazy start. I lined up just to the left of the start bouy about 3 deep, seems like everyone else lined up here too. Start was chatoic! Swam with head above water for 1st 50 yds or so until I had some wiggle room. Got some clearance and set into a rythem maybe around 200yards or so. Hands and feet most of the swim. Navigation a bit off again, kept drifting to the right. Sighted frequently and made adjustments. Never got too far off the course. I swam my race, wasn't concerned about getting passed or passing. I need to catch a draft next time to help pick up my pace next time.
What would you do differently?:

Line up in a less crowded area. Pick someone to draft off of, push harder through the finish.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Because of the tear in the suit's left calf, I had to remove it gingerly, didn't want to tear it more than it was. Forgot to release goggles and cap into sleeve. Once swim gear was off, transition into bike was smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Not tear wetsuit while putting it on.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 30s
  • 24 miles
  • 16.46 mile/hr
Comments:

I Suck, no two ways about it. I need to train more on the bike. I got passed WAYYYYY too much, my gearing on the hills was straight out poor and the course kicked my GD ASS! HR was way too high at the start and it never leveled off during the course. This race segment really made me realize how much work I need to put in on the bike. I am not a happy camper right now.
Ate 1 cliff bar on the bike, 1/3rd at a time. Drank 2/3rds of aerodrink with 2-1 gatoraide water ratio.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. More T.I.T.S. Don't overhydrate on the bike. I had to piss so bad towards the end. I tend to overhydrate when I have the Aero Drink is on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Had to piss, dumped a bottle of water down my tri-shorts and let it go right there in T2. My wife got it on video. No you can't see it!
Otherwise, fine.
What would you do differently?:

Not overhydrate on the bike.
Run
  • 51m 53s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Terrible, abysmal, embarrasing, gassed. I don't know if it was lack of running for 2 weeks while resting the knee, the hilly bike course, or nutrition mis-management, maybe a combo of all 3, but I had nothing for the run, absolutely nothing, no gass, no pop, no speed, no energy. I trudged the run from the 1st step to the last. The knee gave me no problems so I can't even blame it on that. I had trouble passing the 62 year old gentleman, who by the way passed me on the bike on a 10+% hill!
Took a gel at mile 4 or so. Took water 3X's.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know, I have to figure this out.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched for a good 12 minutes. Didn't want the quad to tighten up on me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nursing the Patellar Tendonitis the past 2 weeks certantly was a factor, I wasn't ready for the run. Nutrition might be an issue and I came into this race with the mindset that I was going to "participate" and not compete, just get through it. That mindset doesn't sit well with me. Up until Saturday, I didn't think I was going to be able to do the run. Even though I got through it, which I should be happy about, I am bummed at my pace/time.

I don't know, but I feel it wasn't a good race.

Event comments:

CGI Puts on Great Events! However, I was expecting a post race BBQ, instead we got a "hogie" with blogna and fatty italian meats. I ate it of course, but it wasn't good.
