Pre-race routine:

The night before I ended up joining up with the other donkeys at Champs. I'm eating dinner and schwimmycoach leans over and says 'you better get some carbs in there.' I scan the plate thinking, 'dude, I know I have this covered...' 5 seconds later I victoriously reply "BEER! Carbs!" Oh snap! schwimmycoach just got owned!

I really should always have at least one beer anytime I race. I'm pretty convinced it's my magical elixir.
Event warmup:

Warmed up at home with a workout DVD and running up and down the stairs. And then I ran from my car to the entrance - does that count? It was COLD! I wasn't running in that temp any more than I had to!

Comments:

This race time brought to you by the letters D, J and the numbers 'davey'.

I really didn't think a PR would be possible today but wow - previous time was 23:48 and I broke it by 30 seconds! In 15 degree weather! I literally can't believe it and I know that the biggest reason I was able to run this well today is because one Mr. djDavey has been kicking my booty on a weekly basis. And, hey, I'm no idiot (peanut gallery can refrain from comments) I've been the one putting in the work and doing the hard running but I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to thinking I can run hard. And dave has really helped me BELIEVE that I can run. So huge thanks to him for that. He kept popping up along the course today - which, part of me was thinking "f!@k" and the other half of me was thinking, "thank god!" (He has this annoying habit of encouraging people to go faster) But it was a huge boost to see dave along the course encouraging and yelling things like "focus!" For some reason, that word is usually all it takes with me - it means an awful lot to me that someone can spot what works and effectively use it. So Dave, thank you!!!

In other race report news, (the more snarky, less grateful news) this chick in a green sweatshirt kept passing me and it was driving me nuts because she would pass me then walk, then pass me, then walk.... she must have done it about 5 times. And then this old dude passed me a couple of times and I was like, that's SO not happening!! I eventually passed him for good (BARELY though ...and he was first place in the 60-65 AG - wow!) The weird thing about this race for me is that I usually seed myself so far back that I end up passing all sorts of people. Yea - I don't think I passed more than 10 people on this one. I was just getting passed left and right. It felt weird - but I think it helped my time. Didn't have to weave around anyone! (schwimmycoach tried getting me to stand up even farther at the start and I was like, uuuhhh, NO!)

As I approached the finish line (after yet another vocal shove from dave) and I saw that I was going to not only exceed my goal (which was 24) but I was going to PR, I just broke out into this huge grin. I was SO happy! I'm seriously geeked out over this run. Just over a year ago, I ran a pace of 9:30 and was THRILLED (and thought I was crazy fast) - to run 7:30 seems ridiculous to me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!

Warm down:

Found schwimmycoach (who had PR'd!) lrunfit (who also PR'd!) talltridad, new guy, kevin and his wife, djdavey and some other friends who had showed up. WE waited for awards as, of course, some donkeys had picked up some hardware. lrunfit 2nd OA!!! and schwimmycoach 3rd in her AG!!

Since it's Sunday and this is supposed to be a long day according to the djdavey marathon training plan, schwimmycoach and I headed out for a 4.5 mile run.... fun? (it wasn't too bad)

Event comments:

Awesome race! Well run, great course, LOVED IT! (except for the running bit - that part was completely miserable)
