Swim
Comments: I started off a bit uncomfortable and was really worried. Most everyone in my group had passed me by. After rounding the first bouy I decided that I just had to do this one way or another and I started concentrating on my strokes and my breathing. Amazingly enough I started SWIMMING!!! I was doing the freestyle and actually moving somwhere. I finished the lap pretty strong but for the next 2 laps I felt amazing. I wasn't getting tired or winded and I started passing people back. This was really making my day. I think I passed 3 or 4 guys and I felt great. At least until I took my first real running step out of the water at the finish. I stepped on a big rock and screwed up my heel majorly. What would you do differently?: I think I will warm up for as long as possible in the water in the future. It took me a good 10 minutes to feel comfortable so I think I am going to try and do that from now on. Transition 1
Comments: This was a good transition. I stayed calm and ran and hopped on my bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I did what I always do on the bike. Hammer!! LOL. I tried to keep well within myself and I think I did that. I was having trouble drinking. I think next race I am going to eat a lighter breakfast and try to eat a gel or somthing during the race. When I would dring I just felt like somthing was going to come back up. Not fun. I kept my breathing in check and I didn't get sucked into charging the hills like some guys I was around. They would stand up and hammer on each hill and by the second lap I couldn't even see them behind me any more because they blew themselves up. What would you do differently?: Eat a different breakfast so I don't feel nauseous(SP) Transition 2
Comments: I don't really know why but along the way I decided to throw my shorts on over my tri suit. I guess it's a comfort thing. This took me a few extra seconds. When I hit the ground off the bike I realized that my heel was going to be an issue. What would you do differently?: Not wear my shorts they started falling down because I was dousing myself with water and I had to keep pulling them up LOL. Run
Comments: This was below my expectations. My goal was 8 min miles to start and then if I felt good I would push it. Well, by the top of the first huge hill, I wasn't feeling it. On the way down I experienced serious pain in my heel so my stride was all goofy. I kept telling myself to just keep it slow and not push beyound my ability and not get sucked into battling with people passing by. I did that pretty well and I was doing ok but on the third lap I had to walk the aid stations and up the big hill. My legs were smoked. Too hard on the bike I guess. Oh well, I will never learn if I don't try. It's a race after all so I want to try my hardest. What would you do differently?: Not walk. Not step on a big rock and destroy my heel. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and ate some cookies, banana and a coke. What limited your ability to perform faster: Zero swim practice. Pushing too hard on the bike (Even though I didn't thing I did) Stupid rocks ruining my run. Event comments: Well, I think it was a great race put on by the organizer. It was a difficult course. I did my best and I completed my first Oly. I now know what it takes and I have a lot of things I know I can work on before Racine. 1 month to go!! Last updated: 2010-01-29 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4 and had breakfast. Stretched and showered. Woke Caleb at 5 and we were on the road at 5:20.
Set up transition, jogged for about 10 minutes and then just hung out and watched the other groups go. We started at 7:45 so we had a while to just hang out. My brother showed up so we hung around with him.
