Light jog then a short swim.
Swim
  • 28m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was trying to get in the chute and decided to just stand in the back and wait. Gun went off and most folks tried swimming early in the water. I tried to high knee and ran into the back of the pack. I dove over a couple of Japanese guys and did a few dolphin dives to get up to the pack. My goggles filled with water and I stopped to fix them. It didn't work. My eyes were burning for most of the swim. Crowd wasn't too bad for the most part. Ran into one guy who was perpendicular to the course and ran into the oncoming swimmers twice as I tried to pass a few folks. I had a good rhythm and stroke for most of the swim. I could have pushed harder though for sure. I settled into my long distance pace which is somewhat slower.
What would you do differently?:

I know I need new goggles and I dread this happening every time. I only have one more race this year before my next deployment so I'm not going to buy a new pair yet.

For the second time the start wasn't ideal for me. I need to make sure I get my strategy and stick to it. I didn't have this problem last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Another good flying mount.

Jogged into T1 though. Could have shaved off some more time.
What would you do differently?:

Make a deliberate effort to pick up the pace from the water exit into T1
Bike
  • 1h 11m 4s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a good ride going out and was fully expecting to be passed like I am standing still and that is what happened. I just try to keep up. I forgot about the right turn on the way back and when it came up I was like crap stupid turn. I was thinking about the run already. I lost what little mojo I had. Then the wind hit. Once I made the turn to come back to the highway, I was like holy crap. The wind was whooping my butt. Then the rain started again. I couldn't wait to get off of the bike. I felt like I was going about 9 MPH. I was so happy to see T2.
What would you do differently?:

Get a new bike and then ride it more often.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

I am really satisfied with my T2. I had a moment where I forgot where the run exit was.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. 2nd fastest in my AG by one second
Run
  • 45m 53s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt fine starting out of T2. Was planning on pushing harder at the start of the run, but didn't really do that. My pace slowed about 3k into it for some reason. It does that when my mind drifts off to my happy place. Any way. I think I was saving some boost for the magic island part. Alot of racers get close to the transition area and think that they are nearly finished. They expend a little more energy at this point and then fade on near the ocean side. I remembered this and just fell in behind a few folks that had passed me. I passed them and about four other guys within the last 1k.
What would you do differently?:

Not to unhappy with my time. Compared to what I need to get in order to be more competitive I am about 4-5 minutes too slow. I would love to run closer to 42. I think I could have eeked out a little more juice.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate some oranges and cookies. Waited for a while before I ate the food they had there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. I don't have nearly the time to do the kind of training I should be doing. I am better this year though. I wish I had the time to train like I did last year. No matter what anyone says, The bike does make a difference.

Event comments:

This is always a great experience from a participants perspective. They take pretty good care of us. Water stations were plentiful and well positioned, Bike mechanics are always helpful, and the volunteers do a pretty good job.
