Swim
Comments: Swam 3 laps of crawl, which I've been working and working on, but pace of others was too fast for me, so I switched to side stroking (my old standby). I had an amazing lap counter who helped so much with my swim by encouraging me enthusiastically onward and updating every lap with pace and # left. What would you do differently?: Keep swimming. Only been able to crawl a whole length since Feb so I've made great progress. Transition 1
Comments: Very cold and wet, decided to take my time and really dry off before putting on fleece biking pants, long cycling jersey and windbreaker. What would you do differently?: Have better weather next time. The time was well spent for my comfort. Bike
Comments: Fun bike, great volunteers I think ROTC students. Toes were numb about the last 1/2. Decided to ride my trusty hybrid bike instead of my shiny new road bike that I've only ridden once. Good decision, fairly slick in parts and my bike is crusted with mud very deeply. What would you do differently?: I heard some folks talking about leaving chemical heaters in their cycling shoes for very cold weather and at T1 transferring them to warm their running shoes. Think I'll try that. Transition 2
Comments: Again decided to exchange time for comfort. I pulled off my wet cycling pants and put on some dry warm long underware. Took time, but felt great. Everyone else was running with the mud all up their back and looked oh so wet. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: A rather uninspired course, but after 3 laps I knew which spectator would be where and enjoyed looking at the very cute black lab pup on the corner. A really fast run for me. I'm usually slightly over 11/min when training on fresh legs. What would you do differently?: Should have pulled on my running gloves. My fingers got rather numb by the 2nd lap. Post race
Warm down: Renamed "attempt to warm up". They intelligently set up the post-race stuff inside and they had hot chocolate, which I cupped while trying to defrost my fingers enough to peel my banana. What limited your ability to perform faster: The weather and doing so many clothing changes. Event comments: This is a slick operation. Many fabulous volunteers made what could have been a miserable experience (given the weather) a great race. The swimming heats that I watched all started exactly on time and there were no hitches anywhere. Last updated: 2010-02-01 12:00 AM

Woke up, heard the wind and rain and almost went back to bed. Instead got up, made a pb&j, packed the car and drove in a downpour for 1 1/2 hours thinking what a terrible idea this was. The rain slowly lessened as I drove. Got there, set up my transition area and began thinking what a sexist set-up this was. Men swam right outside the transition area. Women swam about 1/3 of a mile away . . . Watched the first heats and got ready for mine.
None really. Treaded water a bit to get physically warmer.
