Run
Comments: I wasn't entirely sure how to take this first run leg out, but I figured I would kind of run with the front of the group and see what I could do without over exerting myself too much. It turns out there were a lot of fast runners out here today or maybe I was just not expecting there to be so many people to take the first run out as fast. Either way, it was good pacing, if there hadn't been that kind of competition out there I may have run this portion slightly slower. I was still able to keep my breathing and heart rate at acceptable levels and I felt pretty solid. The course did offer up two sections covered by water run off allowing me to exhibit my leaping abilities. Some people just sloughed through the standing water, but I wasn't about to have myself run in water soaked shoes. What would you do differently?: Nada. No regrets here. Transition 1
Comments: Hmmm, this is new - a run to bike transition, but its much easier than a swim to bike transition. I put on shoes before hopping on the bike. I briefly threw on the sunglasses for the purpose of keeping any rain out of my eyes, but the minute I put them on they fogged up so I tossed them to the ground. I had a short run to the mount line before a what always seems to be slow stop-and-swing-my-leg-over-the-bike mount. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Did everything the best way I know how. Bike
Comments: This is my second time racing on this course and both times I've found it to be the most fun part of the day, and biking isn't even my sport. At first I may have been pushing too hard because my legs were feeling pretty tight and it wouldn't be too long before I would be running again so I tried to keep the pace comfortable for a race. In retrospect, I probably could've afforded to push it just a tad more. My average was a little lower than I was expecting, but I also took a lot of the turns pretty slow and cautiously considering the wet conditions. A lot of passing on the 3 loop course, particularly on the hill climb. I also spotted a few individuals drafting off of each other, but whatever. Much of the talk afterwards was the large number of flats out on the course. It seemed abnormally high for this distance and the decent quality of the roads we were riding on. What would you do differently?: Maybe push my pace a little harder. I know I didn't max out on the down hills, but I also didn't want to wipe out on the wet roads. Overall, I beat my time from last year by 2 minutes. Transition 2
Comments: A little difficult trying to get a fast dismount. I was riding with socks on so I didn't want to step out of my shoes and then have soaked socks from the wet ground (and there was no way I was going to chance running sans socks). I'd try to stand up and swing my leg around but every time I did my shoes would just clip back in. Not a big deal, I ended up stopping completely to hop off, it just added a few more seconds at the dismount line. Otherwise, pretty standard. What would you do differently?: Nada. Run
Comments: I started off very focused on not blowing up on the first few segments of the run. My legs felt good and my breathing wasn't overly labored. I didn't run with my Garmin so I was pacing myself purely off my PRE; which was pretty high but I found that I could hold on to this level just long enough to get me through the run portion of the race. This definitely wasn't easy, and the one climb we had hurt, but once I hit the dam I knew it wouldn't be too much longer before I was finished. I had no idea what I was splitting but seeing that I ran 6min+ miles I was very pleased. Had the distance been a 5k I would've PR'd that distance. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: I grabbed a bunch of post race food and drink and staggered around transition. Put on some dry clothes. My left knee felt a little awkward once I started to walk, so I tried to walk it off. Maybe it was from taking one too many leaps across the standing water on the run course. Eventually it went away. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not being completely rested. I have a week or so to go before my IMKS taper begins. Event comments: A well run and organized race for an established event in the area. Last updated: 2010-02-03 12:00 AM

I entered this race via a race discount I received for having entered in last year's SMP triathlon that ended up getting rained out. With IMKS coming up in a few weeks I decided to treat this as a hard training day.
Things started out Saturday before the race with an email from the JCPRD, the organizers of the event, stating that based on the constant rain we've been receiving and the projected cool temps that the swim was going to be canceled and that all triathletes were going to be doing a duathlon instead. I was slightly annoyed about this, I would probably never sign up for a duathlon on purpose. I am a swimmer at heart and removing this changed my whole mentality going into this race. Although it would've been an ice cold bike ride in the mist following a swim, I still would've done it. However, once I showed up on race day I wasn't entirely upset anymore; it was a cold and dreary morning.
Breakfast consisted of a bagel with peanut butter, s'mores pop tarts, and a cup and a half of coffee. Once at the race site I grabbed a good transition spot by the bike exit and run exit, then I chit-chatted with some folks after getting body-marked (although was it really necessary to mark my arms if I'm going to be wearing long sleeves and there is no swim?).
Easy five minute jog. Popped in a GU 10 minutes before the race and then hopped up and down at the start line to stay warm.
