Swim
Comments: Went in with my group and the water felt fine, but rough. Started swimming. Such as it is. Swam through some waves, but got caught on the other side. Tried the crawl, the side stroke and back stroke. Got bitch slapped for about 18 minutes when my old friend 'anxiety' caught up. They say you should name your fears. Well, mine's now called 'Petey.' So next time I can say, "Yo, Petey! Haven't seen you around for a bit you fat bastard! Now get off! You're holding me back!" Got a tow past the chop from a kayak and then surfed in. Was not happy. What would you do differently?: Um, besides A) learn swim and B) bewitch the surf, not much. Transition 1
Comments: Was allowed to continue with the race, but no pressure here. What would you do differently?: Finish the swim so the rest of this counts. Bike
Comments: I've got nothing to prove but what I can do so I used this as an opportunity to learn long course management. The bricks at the beginning weren't as harsh as I'd been lead to believe. Took my time. I'd taped some extra gels to my cross bar. A mile out a girl ahead dropped hers so I handed mine off. Despite the wind, I think I made good time. Had it up around 22/23 at times, 15/16 in the wind. Saw Sue ahead of me at the beginning but she dropped me like nuthin. I had FUN on this bike ride! What would you do differently?: Learn to swim. Transition 2
Comments: Again, easy. Slashed my thumb on my chain wheel. Blood and oil all over my hand. Always rack next to a Virgo. Had Neosporin and bandaids at the ready. Run
Comments: Came up on Sue just after mile one and we ran together for the rest of the way. Pretty day, easy run. Sue looked great. Relaxed and with a beautiful smile on her face. She was hurting but never let it show. She's gonna make a great Ironman. What would you do differently?: Learn to swim. Post race
Warm down: Sue and I crossed the finish together. Grabbed cold towels and went right into Medical. She was cramping and I needed to get my cut cleaned out. The abrasion team was SO HAPPY to see me. Yeah. "Does this hurt?" Compared to what? But, thank you! They did a great job. What limited your ability to perform faster: Can't swim. Did awesome on the bike. Just wanted to run with Sue. Event comments: I'm coming back next year to kick Tampa Bay in the butt. Was awesome to meet so many fabulous BT'ers. Very kind athletes who have been great letting me know that DNF happens. At least I wasn't DNS. I'm proud of me for getting in the water and hanging on as long as I did. Last updated: 2005-12-01 12:00 AM

Up at 5 am. Ate 3 hours before my wave per Sensei: egg, toast, PB coffee and water. Slept like a log the night before which to date is unusual. Was really calm. Packed and repacked the transition bag. I'd mixed a heavy batch of Sustained Energy for the bike and Recoverite for after. Walked to the bike and set up ala Makes All The Sensei in the World. Things looked good. Grabbed my wet suit and some water and walked to the beach.
Wandered about. Saw Luis from Hammerheads and got a great hug. "Don't look at the water! Just keep moving!" Advice from an Ironman you take. Found JLDiCarlo and Possum, then rbschlesinger. Jen went to warm up. High fived Rich on the way into his wave. Put Jen in the shoot and shouted her off. Discovered I was wearing my wetsuit backwards. Found Renee and Sue7013. They went up front, I was going to follow my strategy: Last one in, last one out. C'mon. How bad can this be? Just keep going forward.
