Swim
Comments: Had a mild asthma(?) attack on entering water...it always happens when I start swimming in cold water, but I tread water for a minute and then started my swim. Kept running into people and it kinda threw off my rhythm. What would you do differently?: Try to find a way to prevent the cold water asthma thing, but I think I handled it pretty well. Go far a short swim a bit closer to when my wave started, I think drying off in the sun while standing in line to go might not have helped. Maybe try not to run into so many people. Transition 1
Comments: Went pretty well, I couldn't run too quick because the long beach wade kinda took it out of my legs for a minute but I still got to the end of the zone pretty quick and grabbed my bike. What would you do differently?: Try to swim a bit further in, even though I could stand up. Bike
Comments: Felt like I drank enough but later on realized I should have had more. Felt really good all until the last 10 minutes or so when my legs began to get tired but I kept it up and had a great ride. Everyone was really friendly on the ride and they had people placed throughout the course spraying water on us and cheering us on. What would you do differently?: Drink a little more on the bike, maybe train more to get faster. Transition 2
Comments: Blazed through this, probably could have gone faster but it's hard to run with a bike when there's a bunch of people trying to do the same thing. Still, I felt pretty quick with the racking and getting to the run course. What would you do differently?: Try to run or jog more with my bike. Have a cold bottle of liquid waiting at my spot. Run
Comments: Had a horrible cramp in my lower back and everytime I tried to jog or run it absolutely killed. Not sure if it's from the bike or from not having enough to drink. Tried to drink more liquid but I just couldn't get it to go down...I'd take one sip and I couldn't drink any more so I just poured as much water over my head as I could to try and cool down a bit. My legs felt fresh though and I was terribly disappointed because I'd worked so hard to get my run time down and I couldn't do it at the race. By the last mile I managed to jog a bit and made sure I hit the finish line running. What would you do differently?: Drink more sports drink during the bike and on the run. Maybe stretch a little more or just suck it up and run through it. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit drinking my powerade and then dragged my stuff all the way to the car. I don't really have a cramping problem...my only concern was to get cool. What limited your ability to perform faster: The cramp in my lower back and the brief spaz in the lake. Other than that, I think I had a good first race. Event comments: I thought the race was very well organized, especially considering the hot weather and all the people involved. Despite this being my first time and being all worried about not knowing where to go...everyone was helpful and marked well. There were lots of people on the bike and run courses offering water and drinks and ice cubes...even a fabulous fire hose on the run. Also, mad props to Gear West for fixing my exploding flat tire and scrunched derailler in like 5 minutes for me before the race. The atmosphere was awesome and everyone was really friendly. At first I was a little nervous around all the hard core racers, but the girls in my age group were awesome and friendly and it really added to the experience. Last updated: 2005-12-01 12:00 AM

Work up, grabbed my gatorade, spaced on the ride to the site, didn't really do anything special...didn't eat anything but a breakfast cookie because I don't like working out on a full stomach.
Didn't warm up much, it was 102 F and I had to be set-up by 7:30...actually got there at 6 am and I didn't start the race until 10:47...over 4 and a half hours of waiting. But I splashed around in the lake with a few others while we waited and watched the pros compete...Yay Hunter Kemper and Emma Snowsill
