Pre-race routine:

It wasn't much nervousness as it was being anxious. I just couldn't sleep. I had to get up at 350AM to go pick up my buddy, but I didn't fall asleep until 130am. I usually don't sleep much anyways, but I sure needed to get more rest than that. Next race, I will ensure I get up early the night before, so that I am tired enough to get to sleep that night.

I picked him and his wife up and we were the first ones there and got set-up in a prime spot in the transition area. I have an english muffin with p-nut butter and some almonds.

I was concerned about fluid intake and I think I might have drank too much. This would be my first ride using a water bottle and I am a fluid junkie. I usually ride my rides with a Camel Bak, but wasn't today for this shorter bike ride. Of course I didn't feel it until the run started and really felt it when I got on the bike.
Event warmup:

I just stretched a bit and checked and double checked to make sure everything was ready to go and I hadn't forgotten anything.
Run
  • 23m 45s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 09m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was easy enough. I am NOT a runner at all. Not sure if it was due to lack of sleep, or being a tad bloayted with fluids, but I had wanted a sub 9:00 min miles for the first segment, but oh well.

I didn't drink anything on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Not drank as much as I did beforehand and maybe try to run a little harder and worry less about blowing my load. Also...run A LOT more in training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

First ever transition. I had some cliff shots on my bike and threw a couple in my mouth...bad move. I wasn't ready to eat anything. I didn't rush and took my time getting a swig of fluid and throwing on my helmet, gloves, etc. It was just like a 20 yard distance from where I had to walk my bike out to where I could get on.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster and worry about eating something AFTER I was on my way on the bike. Also, start pedaling some, then get shoes clipped in. I can easily get it under 1 minute for the next time
Bike
  • 43m 54s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 16.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I normally easily bike the course at 19MPH. I'm better at biking than anything else, so really not pleased with my time. I was so worried about my legs for the final run that I coasted a lot down the hills in order to save my legs. I could have pounded out above 19MPH if I hadn't have done that...BUT...if I knew my legs would have been a bad as they were going to be after the run, I would have not tried to save them at all.

MY guts were really acting up die to the ride. I kept burping up some of the Cliff Shots and really realized my diet the night before wasn't what it should have been.
What would you do differently?:

Ride A LOT harder and not worry ahead to the next portion of the race too much...just GO!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

I was slow coming into transition. I was so worried about passing the dismount line. I had just unclipped my shoes and walked bike into transition. Again...could have easily gotten it under a minute, but was not rushing.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting feet out of shoes on final entry and jumping off/running with bike. I had bought speed laces, but didn't put them in yet and was worried if they would feel different. Next race I will have them in and be used to them
Run

Comments:

WOW!!! I left my legs in the transition area I think!!!

It felt like I wasn't even moving at all, but I started at a 9:30 pace, which didn't last. I wasn't huffing and puffing...I just didn't have anything left in my legs.

FYI...DO NOT wear a loose mesh shirt to try and keep cool. That was probably one of my biggest mistakes and I paid the price. Shortly after the run started my nipples were BURNING!!! i kept asking the people at the water station if they had any nipple cream, but they didn't. I was forced to pull my shirt off my chest and make it look like I was giving myself boobies. That messed me up even more and I walked a bit/ They still hurt.

I had only one session before where I ran 1.5 miles, biked 11.5, then I ran .25 miles before I started cramping. I didn't have any cramps this time, but I REALLY need to do some BRICKS.
What would you do differently?:

#1...NOT wear a mesh shirt. My next race is a Sprint Tri, so I will have a Tri Suit, so it wont be an issue.

Do more and more BRICKS to get used to the feeling...and more running
Post race
Warm down:

I felt good afterwards...more muscle failure than fatigue. I wasn't really hungry, or dying of thirst. The best thing was seeing my Twins at the finish line. It was great that my Wife got them up early and brought them to the race. We stayed around for the awards ceremony and I learned REAL quick not to judge people on their appearance as the other Clydes that placed picked up their awards. If anything, it was appreciation AND motivation.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor Diet the night before(gotta get that figured out).

Poor Hydration before race (felt bloated)

Poor Sleep the night before (like being in a fog)

Poor choice of clothing for the race(MESH IS A NO NO)

Poor Preperation...not enough BRICKS and running during training.

Event comments:

DLT always puts on some great races. They were VERY helpful and on time with everything, and explained everything perfectly. Lookign forward to my sprint on August 15th.
