Swim
Comments: Okay swim. Had a good start, and was comfortable quickly. Not rough at all. The wetsuit still pulls at my shoulders and it's officially time to replace it. Also, my sighting wasn't great- I went for the tinted goggles since there was sun in my eyes coming home last year. That never appeared this year. For the rest, it was just a workman like swim. Overall, I'd give myself a B-. That said, it was awesome to see the family cheering for me coming out of the water. That was just great. What would you do differently?: Get a new wetsuit. Also, I'd start my swim training earlier. But, given that I only have a few weeks of regimented swimming under my belt this year, I can't complain too much. Transition 1
Comments: Still need to refine this. Not my focus, frankly, and I added some time this year by opting to put on the 305 (which I rarely looked at). Need to work on this instead of giving away a free minute every time. What would you do differently?: Skip the Garmin; practice with my wetsuit removal. Bike
Comments: Sort of frustrated here. I felt like I did really well versus last year. Felt strong. Handled the hill correctly both times. Put in good effort. But, was only 2 seconds faster than last year. Now, granted, last year I had been training for 5 months instead of 1 1/2, but I have been on the bike more and was hoping to see tangible results, and didn't. Partly, I think I am missing out on the higher intensity stuff I'd get from the gym hill programs I used to use; my garage spin bike workouts haven't replaced that. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I also think I did a good job forcing myself to eat a GU and drink my GuBrew even when I didn't feel the need. Transition 2
Comments: The time is a guess. The timing company lumped T2 and the run. I felt, fast, but could be quicker. Still love my Zoot pull ons. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: A big difference from last year. I felt a million times better. After a nice started running past the cheering family, I had a hint of a side cramp going over the bridge, but that went away in about a half mile. Then just got into a groove. The plan was to have a solid first half, and then leave it all out on the way back. In retrospect, I didn't do the second part. I never walked, and kept a solid effort, but didn't push it. At the end, I planned a finishing kick, which was shorter than I thought since the finish line was closer than I thought it would be. I finished feeling strong; too strong. In fact, within a few minutes, I was jogging to the car to get my kids sand toys. What would you do differently?: Finish stronger. Put in a more intense effort. I was too careful this time. Maybe afraid of overdoing it. Post race
Warm down: Just found my family and relaxed while the kids built sand castles. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training is still in its relative infancy. Also, my mental toughness on the run wasn't there. Event comments: Nice race. Would do again. Last updated: 2010-02-15 12:00 AM

Used the race as an excuse to bring the family down to Dana Point for a last minute vacation. Spent Friday and Saturday splashing around in the pool with the kids, and mostly laid off the temptations of the resort. The family came to the race with me this year, which was great. I woke up about 4:15 and had a bowl of cereal, and the family was up and out of the hotel by 5 a.m. Big props to the wife for helping wrangle the 3 kids under 4 all morning!
Made a quick Starbucks stop in Laguna Beach on the way to the race, and was parked in the event by a bit after 5:30. By the way, it was much easier getting into the event this year -- which was something I complained about in my log last year. They collected the 10 bucks for parking on the way out this time, which made it much easier and eliminated a big line at least when I came in.
As usual, I didn't warm up much. Got my transition area situated (there was plenty of room by the way), and made the mandatory pit stop. Felt much for comfortable in my second season from a nerves perspective. Felt like the old man (if not quite seasoned veteran) that I am. Met back up with the family a couple times, fell behind time-wise a bit, and then rushed into my wetsuit for a quick pre-race swim.
