Total Time = 1h 21m 29s
Overall Rank = 49/606
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 12/88
Pre-race routine:

Got there way early. Got body marked, set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Brought stationary trainer and road bike and warmed up for 20 mins. The parking area is a little far off, so I didn't cut it to close to start time. Ran with backpack to staging area and ran for about 5 minutes (not enough). Got wetsuit on and swam in water for about 5 minutes, but then had to stand around for about 25 mins waiting for wave start.
Swim
  • 12m 54s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start was crazy. I opted to start front and center. Never had and thought I was fast enough to keep clean water in front of me. It was a little rough. A few kicks and punches absorbed and dealt. Just as I was finding my pace, we reached the waves ahead of us. Not no bad to navigate. Once I rounded the extreme markers and headed back, it was all good.
What would you do differently?:

I had trouble seeing the markers and found myself just following people in front of me. My goggles are pretty scratched up and may need to be replaced to help see the markers.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

T1 was not bad. I noticed a lot of bikes on my rack which made me feel a little better. Wetsuit and socks took a little longer than normal. Ranked 25th of 606.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster to transition. get socks on quicker.
Bike
  • 40m 12s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 23.18 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt very good on the bike. I was lucky to have a guy pass me and I made the commitment to use him as a carrot. He would pull away, but i would climb back to him. This yoyo effect seemed to help me forget about the pain.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe drink more water. I had some left over and I felt that it could have helped me on my run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

The problem was when I started running off, I felt a rock in right foot. Had to take shoe and sock off. I put my foot back in shoe and felt the rock again, it was in the shoe, not the sock. Cost me 15+ seconds. Other than that great transition. Rank 190 of 606
What would you do differently?:

Take a second to brush foot off.
Run
  • 26m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, something went very wrong. I was looking to do 22:30 and came up well short of that. I just could not move fast. Had a cramp in my side, which I never get training. I was also thirsty. May not have hydrated enough on bike. My HR ave. was only 168 which means I was not pushing it as hard as I should have been.
What would you do differently?:

More water on bike. Need to work on bricks and focus on running.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked and drank.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure what happened on that run. Need to figure it out soon.

Event comments:

Let me start by saying that I came Sat. to pick up my packet and saw several groups of cadets sweeping the shoulder of the highway! That was awesome. The transition area had brand new bike racks with air pumps at each rack! The event was well organized and the venue is great. The bike course is great and that is enough to ensure I will be back next year.

Course: This was a great swim course. Deep water start, which was different for me. Water was like glass. Start are is different from finish area which is good, because the first wave was finishing by the time we got started.

Course: The course is great! Wide smooth shoulders, the only problem is that there are a few select hills in the way. It is nice to have a race without multiple loops and 20+ sharp turns. Having been in the last few waves meant that there were a ton of people on course by the time I got out there, but it was not a problem since there was so much space. The run out and in to Camp Buckner is narrow and the road is a rough.

Course: This course was very tough. Almost no portion was flat. There was a steep hill which lasted about 400 - 600 meters, but it seemed longer than that. The best part was running past transition and the crowd cheering. No distance markers which was probably good, because i was hurting.
