Overall Rank = 68/450
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 18/67
Pre-race routine:

had everything packed an in the car the night before. No kids made it a little easier, they would come later. Set up transition and got time chip. Relaxed and walked aroud a little.
Event warmup:

No stationary cycle. only 15 min run and keep moving. Swam for about 10 minutes before race meeting.
Swim
  • 27m
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a great swim course. It was my first time in an olympic and the distance seemed long, but I covered it quickly. It took about 400m to get into a nice rythim, but once I got it I was moving well. Not to much trouble passing people from earlier waves.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe warm up a little more. If I can catch my smooth pace sooner, I would have a better time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Transition was good. Shoes were a little tough to get into, but that is what you get with regular cycling shoes. Socks got a little stuck, but my rank for transition time was 3/67 and I don't think it gets much faster than that for me.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster into transition.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Here is what I came away with. There are a lot of great cyclist up there. I had a good ride, but got beat by many strong riders. Leg strength is a big target for me this off season. My climbing was weak.
What would you do differently?:

I would hammer on the decents. I brought about 40oz of liquid which was about right (cytomax and water). I ate two power chews. probably need more liquid calories next time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

I ran past my rack and spent several seconds looking for it. Should have had the yellow towel i normaly bring. I also rode slow to get to the dismount line. That was probably not necessary.
What would you do differently?:

Once i found the spot transition was good. Nothing different. 13/67.
Run
  • 49m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Once again my weakness showed through. Although, I felt good about keeping under 50 min. I was slow for the first mile and made an effort to regain my legs. Once I felt better i picked it up. I thoght I might get a negative split going, but that would not happen. i did loose some time when I saw Aiden running down the sideline to catch me. I encouraged him to catch me and we had fun. It cost me about a minute, but it was worth it.
What would you do differently?:

Eat more calories on bike and not be afraid to blow up. Keep the negative split goal.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Keep from dying. I did drink chocolate milk and moved around, to aid in my recovery knowing i had another olympic 8 days later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More calories on bike. Fear of blowing up before race was done.

Event comments:

I have done 4 races. This was by far the best. It helped that the day was perfect. There were so many mashalls and police that there is no way you could go wrong on the courses. The transition area was good and the food at the end was great (chocolate milk! great). I will try to make it back next year.

My heart rate was up and down and looked the same as the elevation profile. I think the key for me is to rest less on the decents. I recovered too much and lost time. I need to keep hammering on the way down and make up time there.

Course: Course was gereat. Most the road was smooth and no too technical. There were many mashalls and police at every intersection.

Heart rate was average 165. I know I can push harder than that. I was conservative. I had never done this distance in a race before and was not sure what to expect. I can push it harder than that.
Course: The course was hilly, but nice. There were two hills of note. The fist is right at the begining. The second is about 1.7 mi into the race. Since it was 2 loops you had to climb a bit in the race.
