Pre-race routine:

Afternoon start, so didn't have to get up early. Caravaned down to Petersburg with the family, Pat, WyldChyld, and Sonny.

Congrats to Sonny for finishing his first triathlon very successfully.
and
Congrats to WyldChyld, you put together a great race today.

Helped Monica and Becca set up for their race. They both did great. Becca started right behind her mom and caught her in the pool. Monica passed her on the bike. Becca was a couple minutes behind when she got to T2. On her way out, I told her she would have to run super fast if she wanted to catch her mom. She caught and passed Monica in the last 100 yards. It was a lot of fun to watch. Turns out Becca ran a 8:13 mile. I think the fastest I've seen her run prior is around 10 minutes.
Event warmup:

Got about 100 yards in the pool, then stood in line and waited my turn to jump in.

Comments:

Felt good about my swim going into this race. Seeded myself with a group who said around 4:30-4:40 for the 300 yards. Jumped in and swam the first 50 yards with no issues.
On the next lap, I ran into the lane line and it popped my goggles apart at the nose piece. I made it to the wall and had to stop and put them back together. I did manage to stay pretty calm and did not panic. After watching the video my daughter took, this cost me about 15 seconds. It also allowed a couple of swimmers to catch me.
I got going again and swam really well. I caught and had to pass 3 people, this cost a little time. One guy I caught at the wall and he didn't stop to let me pass. I got caught on the wrong side of the lane line for 2 strokes, with swimmers coming at me.
What would you do differently?:

Not have my goggles come apart.

Transition 1

Comments:

Had a little trouble with helmet straps, but no big issues.
What would you do differently?:

Not a bad T1, but can always go faster.

Comments:

Got started and noticed my aerobottle was rattling alot. Looked a little closer and noticed the velcro straps were not connected. I did the best I could to strap it down. Got passed in the first mile. I don't like to be passed on the bike. I did not draft, but stayed with the guy for most of the rest of the race. I caught and passed him twice and I don't think he liked that and would pass me back pretty quickly, but was not able to ride away. He was a strong bike and I thought I'd just let him set the pace and see what kind of run I could put together.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. Ride felt good. Pacing was good. My gear changes were right on, I didn't get caught in the wrong gear that I can remember.

Comments:

Almost forgot to take feet out of shoes going into transition. I put socks on this year since I've been dealing with plantar fasciitis and I gave up the Zoots.

Run

  • 3.2 miles

Comments:

Legs felt pretty good and foot gave me no problems. This is a tough run. By the time I get my legs under me, the hills have started. This makes it very hard to pick up the pace. I carried a gel flask with water, 1 gel, and some caffeine. I drank about 1/2 of it.

I was able to push a little on this run. Thinking about Becca pushing to catch her mom in the earlier race helped to motivate me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Happy here. Have not been running much the last little over a month, so this was kinda a test.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked, talked, and spectated

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Goggles coming apart and a little lack of recent run training. Not an excuse by any means, but want to log for myself: I rode almost 50 miles yesterday. Everything this year is geared toward IMWI in September so training through these short, fun races.

Still making progress, pushing that line (age) of diminishing returns further away.

Event comments:

Good race, challenging course. Well run.
