Swim
Comments: Swim went okay, for the most part. My wave pretty much left me in the dust, though. For the first leg, I did pretty good. I only wavered off course a couple of times, and never for more than a few strokes. After rounding the first buoy, we were swimming right into the sun, and my goggles made it impossible to see the next buoy. Twice I ended up doing a modified breast stroke in order to remove my goggles, sight, put the goggles back on, and go back to swimming. Once I rounded the second buoy, it was a straight shot back to the beach, and I was able to catch some feet here and there of the men in the wave behind me. I also experimented with some different breathing patterns in anticipation of the 1.2 mile swim in August. When I hit the sand, it was really hard to get moving, so I just walked out of the water, and started jogging once I hit the beach. What would you do differently?: Not much. I was only a little slower than last year, and considering the goggle problem, and the slow exit from the water, I'm satisfied. Transition 1
Comments: Moved way to slow in this transition. I ate a gel, and drank some water before I got my stuff on. I also pretty much walked the bike out of transition. What would you do differently?: I think simply lack of practice in the Tx affected this time. Bike
Comments: Being in the second of 5 waves really helped here. I was able to have a sense of passing vs being passed. My odometer wasn't working, so I only had cadence to go by, which probably affected my speed. But overall, I felt pretty good. Having the aerobottle definitely helped as well. I was able to take 4 electrolyte pills while on the bike, and that, plus the amount of fluid I drank probably had a great effect on how I felt after the race. What would you do differently?: The bike was slower than last year as well, but not by much. Considering last year I had ridden (for me) a ton, and this was the third time this year I'd been on my road bike, I'm happy with the results. Transition 2
Comments: No yanks in the shoes hurt here, but I was just plain slow. I also took a couple swigs of water, and finished the tail end of a gel before heading out. What would you do differently?: Short of more practice and yanks in my runners, probably dropping the socks is the only other thing--and it's not likely to happen. Run
Comments: Started out running out of transition. My calves were like rocks. It tool almost 2 miles for them to loosen up. At the first water stop (very soon after transition), I took a dixie cup of water, and choked on it a little. When I coughed, I peed! I felt like an old lady. Oh well. Dwayne caught me before mile 1 this year! After a couple of cycles, I quit the 8/2 intervals. It was so hot, and I was more interested in finishing healthy and feeling good than my time, so I dropped to whatever felt good. There were a number of cottage owners on the course with sprinklers and extra water, which was great. What would you do differently?: Not much. I know I could have run faster/more, but the heat factor was pretty crazy (the high was 95F), and I made a conscious effort to take it easy. Post race
Warm down: Jumped back in the lake to cool/rinse off. Changed in the car, then waited around for the awards ceremony to see Trix get her AG award. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, lack of training, lack of training. This summer is just turning out really busy for me, and tri training is on the back burner. I'm definitely stronger than last year, even without training, so that seems to bode well for next season. Event comments: Though the post-race activities are almost non-existant, this is a great community-based race. The shirt alone is worth registering! Last updated: 2005-12-06 12:00 AM

Not much. Got most stuff packed up the night before, so in the morning, there wasn't much to do beyond wake up and leave.
It was too hot to warm up. Picked up packets, set up transition, found Trixie in the AMAZINGLY long porta-potty line. The race started about 30 minutes late, so we stood around for a while at the beach.
