Swim
Comments: Pre-race jitters were so bad I couldn't get a decent breath at first; calmed down more when I got going. I spent a lot of time doing the TI drills but not enough time putting it back together into a stroke, and my form fell apart pretty much from the start. What would you do differently?: I'm joining the masters swim program here because I think I need actual coaching if I'm going to get faster. I also need to get my sympathetic nervous system in control before the next race. Transition 1
Comments: I'm going by their times but as bad as this T1 was, I can't imagine I actually spent 7 minutes picking my nose in 40 degree weather. HFP screwed up the split times somehow. 4-5 min I'll believe, I forgot to turn my clothing right side out and took forever getting the bike tights on. What would you do differently?: Transition practice!!! Turn clothes right side out first; easy 20-30s there. Bring along a PVA towel, they dry you faster. Next race will be warmer so maybe consider a sausage casing. Bike
Comments: I'm going by originally posted bike times which match my computer, not the revised times which I think have T1+T2 added in. This was a fun course, cold but sunny. I passed people frequently on the climbs; I tended to get passed on the flats and especially descents (I was probably too conservative but my rear brakes are going). Of course, the hardcore people on the tri bikes smoked me no matter where I was. The big scary hill everyone kept talking about wasn't actually that bad, but I train in a hilly area. What would you do differently?: Be less of a wuss -- pedal harder, be more aggressive on the descents, stay on the drops more often. Be more efficient with the clipless pedals (it wasn't until 1/2 way in that I remembered "oh yeah, I can pull too"). A lot of this will come with TITS. Oh and drink more. Transition 2
Comments: They don't have T2 times posted, I did this from math and it could be completely wrong, but matches what I remember. What would you do differently?: Transition practice!!! Run
Comments: I don't know either my AG or overall run rank due, I can't trust their overall stats at this point. Run went fine for my experience level. I would have thought I was running slower than this, actually. What would you do differently?: Nothing, just keep putting in the miles. Post race
Warm down: Water, light jogging, followed by extensive stretch. What limited your ability to perform faster: In order: lack of overall experience, overly conservative on the bike, complete lack of transition training, need for swim coaching. Event comments: Post-race could have been better organized, e.g., there was a food station but it was not well marked at all. The big problem I have is with the timing data analysis, which they screwed up royally. The course itself and the participants were great and I really enjoyed myself at the time.
