Swim
Comments: Started in the first row, on the buoy line. First leg was into the chop. Couldn't stick on any feet to draft. As soon as I found some, they were going up over my head riding the waves. Rough swim. What would you do differently?: More practice swimming in chop. I didn't sight often enough, and I got off course a couple times. That really didn't help my time. Conditions were tough, and I should have been able to take better advantage of being a strong swimmer. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition. I had a good spot in the rack, so I had a fast transition. Got wetsuit off quickly, slapped on helmet and glasses and took off. Had an excellent flying mount. What would you do differently?: Just go faster. I was a little discombobulated from being tossed around on the swim, so I went a bit slower than I could have. Made sure to take time, and not make mistakes. Bike
Comments: It was windy in the water, and even more windy on the bike. The disc wasn't too bad though. I'm big enough that it wasn't pushing me around. Head wind sucked. What would you do differently?: Run a lighter wheelset. I had to make do with a disc cover on my heavy training wheel, rather than my lighter 404 rear wheel. Would that have made much of a difference? Who knows? I could feel the rear wheel taking a while to get up to speed when I need to accelerate. A lighter wheel would have let me get back up to speed faster. Transition 2
Comments: Was a little slow in getting running shoes on. Tried to get the grass off my feet before putting on my socks. Gave up and just slapped it all in place, grass and all. Took off for the run. What would you do differently?: Faster transition. Run
Comments: Couldn't make it hurt on the run. Felt like I was running slower than I was. HR was in the low 160 range. I wanted it to be in the upper 160/low 170 range. I did it in training, but couldn't do it in the race. The swim and the bike took more out of me than I thought. I just kinda cruised the run. Managed to push it hard the last 1/2 mile or so. HR was up to mid-160's when I finished. Saw Rick and James out on the run. I missed seeing Jeff Bostic. I was just starting out as all the pros were finishing, so that was cool to run past all of them as they were coming in. Damn those guys ( and girls ) are fast. What would you do differently?: Learn to make it hurt more. Post race
Warm down: Got the famous icey cold towel on the neck. Got out of the finishing area and found Jess, Jeff, and the rest of the BT crew. Was not feeling so good at that point. Almost hurled. I think too much salt. Between the saltwater I swallowed on the swim and the gatorade, my stomach was kinda queasy. I drank a bottle of plain water and felt better. Went and got a massage after walking around a bit and changing out of my running shoes into my sandals. Ahhhhh. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Mostly mental. I didn't push the run as hard as I know that I can. But that's what the first couple races of the season are for, dusting off the cobwebs and getting the mind back into the right state to race. Event comments: Once again, an awesome race, well attended by many from BT. A great start to the season for those of us stuck in the cooler northern parts. Lots of good training, good racing, and good times. Lots of laughing, some great stories, and some even funnier pictures. Met a lot of new faces, saw a lot of familiar ones. Such a wonderful feeling to all be together. Melancholy feeling having to head home afterwards, but there will be many many more races and other opportunities to reconnect with friends. :) Last updated: 2005-12-06 12:00 AM

Woke up, got dressed, had bowl of oatmeal and cup of coffee. Drove to the race with Jess, Jeff, James, and Ron. Jammed to tunes from the Ipod on the way. Parked in front of La Veranda. Hoofed it over to transition, arrived there about 6:00. Got body marked. Saw Hunter Kemper.
Setup transition, filled aero bottle on the bike, checked tire pressure.
I had the best jockstrap. Thank you Jess! :) You kept me sane this weekend and made sure I didn't forget anything (like stem bolts...)
Ran about 10 minutes easy with a couple pickups, last minute prep of transition, then walked over to the swim start. Was running a bit late, and I was in the second wave, so rushed to get to the start in time. Had just enough time to get in the water and get wetsuit wet and adjusted before the wave went. Didn't get in a swim warmup, but with the chop, that wouldn't have been very doable anyway.
