Pre-race routine:

We (Bob, the kids and I) didn't get on the road until almost 5PM on Friday, so we didn't even get into the B&B until almost 9PM. So we just unpacked and sat on the veranda with some BTers who were dutifully carbo loading on beer (no names, eh Karl, Rick, Lane and Russ??). Saturday mroning after breakfast, Bob and I did the swim practice with about 10 other BTers in the washing machine...oops, I mean gulf for about 15 minutes. That was one rough swim, and I had already heard that it wasn't going to get any better on race day.

In the afternoon, we biked the run course.

Dinner with about 30 BTers at Dish was great. Had a wonderful time. Christine and Tom brought their kids who were terrific company for our boys.
Event warmup:

Although my wave didn't start until 8:40, we still had to get down there early before transition area closed to set up. Bob and I walked down at about 5:45, got marked and set up our stuff. Walked back to the room and was relaxing by 6:40. GREAT! Plenty of time to rest, eat, caffeinate and prep myself. Lubed all friction areas with body glide and put a HUGE coat of Pam on my legs. I felt like a slice of bacon I felt so greasy!!

Walked back to start area with the wetsuit on to my waist. Felt nice since it was a bit cool outside. Did ~5 min w/u swim before lining up.

Comments:

Had a horrible swim. As soon as I began dolphining, I realized my goggles were leaking. Had to stop and fix before I got too far out. Hard to spot the buoys with the rough chop + swimming into the sun, and I discovered too late that I was sighting off the wrong one. Had to veer way over to the right so I wouldn't miss the turn. Just before the turn buoy, someone sideswiped me and SLAM! Kicked me right in the goggle. MAN, that hurt! I couldn't even react. I just stopped and screamed it hurt so much (didn't do my total time very much good either). What's worse, I couldn't get the goggle to reseal again, so seeing out of my left eye was out of the question. After the turning buoy, bad turned to worse. The right goggle was leaking a little as well. I spent most of the rest of the swim with my eyes closed, and had to do a lot of breaststroking to sight.
What would you do differently?:

Not get kicked? Not stop to scream?? (HONESTLY, I couldn't help it!)
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

No way to have a great transition time. My rack was WWAAYYYYY off the beaten path of the entry/exit aisle to transition area. (I guess they figured as long as I have to have a late wave when the wind and chop is worse, I might as well have an awful transition placement as well!)

I had so much Pam on my legs, the wetsuit practically slid itself off!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Did pretty well.

Comments:

Just stayed to the left for most of it and kept passing everyone. Realized about a mile or two into it that my left contact lens had come out in the water when my goggle flooded, so vision felt a little loopy sometimes. Only one incident with a motorcycle/sidecar that was doing some video. They were blocking most of the road, and I had to actually go to the far LEFT of the road, almost to the curb, to avoid them because they were going so slow! Other than that, I did my best and am happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe be a little more aggressive on turns, but all in all I was pretty happy with it. It was a windy race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Knew I was slow overall, so I figured I'd plop my butt down and put on my socks (I usually go sockless) and have a comfortable run.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to put on socks standing if I'm going to use them!

Comments:

Forgot to pack my fuel belt water bottle holder, and I'm used to taking a little sip every 3 minutes. Couldn't find what I needed at the expo, so I just rellied on the water stops. My brain was just not working like it should've. Since I usually have my own drink, I'm used to only getting water at the stops. My brain was still thinking that way, so I only got water at the stops instead of gatorade. By mile 5 I was starting to feel a sugar drop but by then it was too late. I was happy to make it to the finish line without tossing my breakfast. Grabbed two gatorades and a water at the finish line and then I felt a bit better.
What would you do differently?:

Use my brain???
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking. Trying to find Bob and the kids, talked to lots of friends (BTers, teammates from previous worlds, tri club members, etc).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of running from injuries, not using my brain (did I mention that??).

Event comments:

I'm not in as good a shape as I was in last year, so I couldn't expect to do as well. My main goal was just to survive that rough swim, and just pass people on the bike and run. I definitely passed more people than people passing me, so I'm very happy with it. Looking forward to next year when I age up and get to start almost 30 minutes sooner!!
