Overall Rank = 165/605
Age Group = M3034
Age Group Rank = 20/50
Pre-race routine:

We got to the transition area really late and only had time for some light stretching.
Event warmup:

Getting on the wetsuit as fast as I could seemed like a warm-up to me!
Swim
  • 09m 24s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think I had a pretty good swim considering this was my first swim race in open water. If only I had some more OW experience I might have had a better time, but I was swimming all over the place, even went inside the triangle course once.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more OWS concentrating on swimming straight.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

When I was setting up for transition before the race in a hurry I forgot to leave my shoes clipped into the pedals so I ran back and put clipped them in forgetting to set my straps how I practiced with them. So once I got on the bike I noticed I had to unstrap first which really slowed down my start on the bike
What would you do differently?:

Again, get to transition set-up earlier to make sure everything is set up properly.
Bike
  • 46m 9s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really fun time on the bike. I was hoping for a faster average speed, but I didn't anticipate how hilly it would be.
What would you do differently?:

I learned that I really need to put in a lot of work on the bike to gain more speed since this was my worst leg considering my overall rank.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Maybe could have been a little faster.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't practice transitions too much, I will next time though!
Run
  • 23m 43s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Even though I put a lot of practice into the run, including finishing a half-marathon earlier in the year, coming off the bike was quite tough. My legs were heavy the whole way and I couldn't really get to the pace I wanted. But, I'm still pretty happy with the run since I averaged about a 7:40/mi which included a walk up a short hill.
What would you do differently?:

I think what I really need to do is work on my bike fitness so I can come off the bike with less fatigued legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Just some walking around and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike fitness!

Event comments:

I give the race a good review since it's my first and I don't have experience with other races. With that said, I think the race was great...nice setting, good challenge, good activities, and really fun overall.

Course: It was a really muddy start from all the rain from the past two days. The course was changed due to all the rain, but still had to go through some mud in the beginning. Once we got on the road it was clean from there on. There were lots of spectators cheering and the finish was nice.
