Pre-race routine:

Got to the site at about 0530 and found an excellent parking spot 1 block from the site. Got marked, set up transition, and started over to the swim start. Spent the most time with race buddy from here who has raced for years and did a very good job of keeping me calm and focused. So if I seen you and didn't stop and seem cordial it's just that I was just trying to minimze the socializing and stay focused.
Event warmup:

Got into my wetsuit (correctly) and got in the water about 20 minutes before my wave. It was time very well spent as I figured out it was as rough as it looked and there would be a premium for staying relaxed and breathing well. Really exaggerated my breathing roll and it helped. Came out of the water as they were calling my age group to the chute. Prayed.
Swim
  • 43m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was rough but it was wetsuit legal and I chose to wear mine more for security than warmth as the water wasn't that cold. Got thrown around in the waves a bit but stayed focused and probably swallowed more salt water breast stroking up to the stairs than at any other time. Goggles fogged a bit but they stayed in place and didn't leak and that's a good thing.
What would you do differently?:

Probably pushed it a bit harder but that's in hindsight and during the swim I was focused on staying smooth and breathing. I thought I was faster but I misread my stopwatch but this time is 6 minutes faster than my last Oly distance so I'll credit the BT swim drills for the help.
Transition 1
  • 04m 23s
Comments:

Had a fair distance to cover to get to my bike. Transition area was tight. Took my time and then ran into a lot of folks going out to the bike start. A lot of folks were stopping to get on their bike and there was a little log jam but it wasn't too bad considering the number of competitors.
What would you do differently?:

Could have probably saved over a minute just by being more aggressive but hey I was already out of contention for the championship trophy.
Bike

  • 19.50 mile/hr
Comments:

To echo Xterratri this was a pass fest. There were times when I gave way to avoid a penalty but overall this was a good bike effort for me. Wished I could have bucked the wind a little harder on the home leg because to that point I had a 20+ mph average. There were a lot of riders on the course and several who obviously have always cycled alone but they never caused me any problems though I did see a few road rash warriors. Loved the big humps in the road. Now that will get your attention. Only had to hit one of those and I was careful to steer around the rest.
What would you do differently?:

Again I could have been a little more aggressive but why risk an accident or penalty. Should have drank more water. Should not have taken the gel as it reacted poorly to the salt water I had drank in the earlier event. Stayed nauseous the rest of the day. Should have just drank lots of water.
Transition 2
  • 04m 14s
Comments:

Typical TA cluster. I wasn't feeling well and was really debating heading to the nearest portalet. Just took my time and drank a little water but I also drank some Heed and it reacted with the salt water. I never figured out the salt water thing until after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Stop by the med tent for a Desani iv via large bore.
Run
  • 1h 07m 27s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Nausea got worse. I never threw up but I think I would have felt better had I done so. Kept drinking water but also had a gatorade and the sugar just cramped the hell out of me. Tried to maintain form but stomach ache gave way to adductor cramps and hamstring cramps. Kept drinking water at aid station and leg cramps went away. Got a kick out of the party atmosphere among residents, some even had their garden hoses out and provided cooldowns upon request.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink Tampa Bay. Not mix Tampa Bay with gels or sports drinks.
Post race
Warm down:

Thankfully they had cold towels at the finish and that felt good. Was trying to get out of the crowd because I felt like I was gonna heave at any moment but I never did. Wandered aimlessly. Called my wife to inform her that there would be no life insurance for her today.( I make this call after every race)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nausea.

Event comments:

Thanks to all the BTers who made this a great weekend and a great race. Thanks to Jess for organizing the dinner and providing the prophetic 8 ball that confirmed I would complete the swim. It was great meeting everyone. Hated to miss the post race fest but I wasn't feeling well and I was traveling with others who could not stay the extra day. You all made this a memorable occassion and oh yeah it wasn't such a bad race either.
