Run
Comments: Started with Angel, she let me go ahead but caught back up at around 12.5. Per the official splits, pace dropped consistently and significantly throughout the distance. I've (trained for and) walked marathons at a much faster pace than this. Splits per official results: 5k, 42:01, 13:32 pace 10K, 1:26:31, 13:54 pace 10M, 2:23:08, 14:18 pace 13.1M, 3:12:32, 14:42 pace Here's the runkeeper app splits through mile 11 when apparently my iphone battery died: 1 13:25 2 13:37 3 13:31 4 14:45 5 14:36 6 14:28 7 14:23 8 14:34 9 14:53 10 15:53 11 15:59 Stated off strong, settled down for another 6 or so, then dropped way off. Regardless, got it done. Made Angel jog the last quarter-mile, and we finished together. What would you do differently?: Train, or, more specifically, be able to train. Post race
Warm down: Went through the finish chute, ate everything in sight, then found Dylan. Hung around a little while, then caught the shuttle back to the 'Dome. What limited your ability to perform faster: That "no training" thing. Event comments: First year race was under the R'n'R umbrella; I'm ambivalent about the changes. Shuttle was a pain, especially the walk to/from the drop-off points. Course was OK, not much of an improvement over the previous one. Nice to have a band every mile or so, good on-course wupport, etc. We'll probably keep doing it, but the added amenities aren't worth the doubling of the price, IMHO. Four days ago was the first day in a month that I could walk without a limp, but I have done this race every year since 2003 and was registered, as were Angel and Dylan, so if I could do it I was going to.
Training consisted of walking three miles yesterday just to see if the calf would hold up.
Woke up at 3:30, coffee and bagels. Showered and dressed, was out of the Westbank motel by 5:30, was parked in the Superdome for 5:50. Shuttle bus to the start, still had to walk a mile or so to the staging area.
Besides the mile walk, did the porta-potty shuffle for about an hour before the start.Corralled with Angel in #20 (I was assigned to #4), still about a half-mile from the start. First wave went off at 7, took a half hour for us to get to the start of our wave. Think we made two more porta-potty stops in that time.
