Pre-race routine:

Woke up, made oatmeal w/ skim milk and grabbed a water bottle for the ride. Arrived at the race around 7:30AM, registered, then sat in the car until 7:40AM.
Event warmup:

After pinning the number on my shirt and going to the bathroom, warmed up slowly for 10 mins. At the 5 minute mark, I started doing strides to get the HR up for the race.

I could tell my legs were tired from yesterday's 50 mile bike ride on the Silver Comet Trail.

This was going to be my only attempt at qualifying as a top seeded runner for the Peachtree Road Race. Goal was 17:36 or better.

Comments:

NOTE: I started my Garmin before running through the chip activation area, so my actual time is 17:12 or so.

After finishing my warmup, found my way to the front of the starting line and continued to loosen up and stretch a little. With a minute to go, a couple of girls (one with a freakin lap dog) got in front of me...for real? Are you serious? I went around them and waited for the whistle. 30 seconds before the start, a group of guys in school track uniforms made their way to the front and we bumped shoulders a little...

GO! We were off!

After the first 100 feet or so, I was about 8 back or so. All the track guys were in front. As the race progressed, I started to pick off guys, but watched as the leader pulled away.

The halfway mark came and went and I had a chance to see how far ahead the leader was. He wsa about 30 seconds or so ahead, but seemed strong and kept getting further ahead.

At the 2 mile mark, I really started to doubt the fact that I'd be able to maintain this crazy pace. I thought to myself that I had hit my "wall" and tried to talk myself out of it. I really wanted to keep the pace going, especially since I was really close to the 5:40 average I needed to maintain to qualify as a top seed for the PRR. Then I thought to myself, "HTFU Ron, HTFU. You're GOING to do this!" At that point I felt a surge...then I heard breathing behind me...

At the 2.5 mile mark, the breathing behind me intensified (I was third or fourth at this point) and then one of the volunteers spoke out to us. As I passed him, he mentioned that the next guy was about 5 seconds behind and that it'd be a shame to let him catch me with the race almost over. Then, as the other guy passed him, I heard the volunteer tell the runner (hard breather) that I was only a little ways up an that it'd be a shame if he didn't catch me...Two timing volunteer whore! haha! :)

The last quarter of mile the course started to decend, and I could hear the hard breather start to make a move to pass me. No way, d00d! I picked it up and used everything I had to then hit that final downhill at the tenth of a mile from the finish. I dropped him at this point and just redlined it! Flat out sprint!

A few seconds before the finish, I glanced at the race clock and smiled as I saw low 17s. I had done it! I qualified as a top seeded runner for the PRR! W00T!

I was 4OA 3OA, and I'm assuming 1AG in the 30-34 35-39 AG. I didn't stick around for awards b/c I had to head back home for a family function.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...I ran this race as well as I could have. This is a MAJOR PR for me. Last (full distance) 5K PR was 18:07.
Post race
Warm down:

PRR Top Seeded qual time!! WOOOHOOOO

Ran back to the Target parking lot to cool down.

My right hand was hurting really bad b/c it was REALLY cold. I tried everything to warm it back up, including sticking my hand in my armpit and fingers (two at a time) in my mouth!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much! :)

Event comments:

Good course to PR and the volunteers were very friendly and supportive.

Course: Slight downhill at the start, then little rollers throughout the entire course. The final quarter mile(?) of the course starts to decend slightly, then the last tenth of a mile is downhill. IMO, it's really rough on the body going down that hill if you're going fast.
