Pre-race routine:

Set up transition. Went down to beach to wait for the race start. Had a Gu about 20 minutes prior to swim start.
Swim
  • 30m 44s
  • 1500 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

Caught a mouthful of water coming into the first buoy. Had to breaststroke for about 10 yards to clear my lungs.
What would you do differently?:

Try to keep close to the other swimmers to maximize the drafting.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Long run from the beach to the transition area. Water was too warm for a wetsuit so that helped the transition time. Heart rate was a bit high after swim.
What would you do differently?:

Have my shoes clipped into the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 9s
  • 23 miles
  • 19.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt good. Took some Hammer gel on the bike in a flask. Took some a couple miles into the ride and about 4 miles before the run. Last 2 miles I dropped to 1 easier gear to make sure my heart rate and legs were ready for the run. This helped a lot since I started off the run feeling good.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less water. Keep a better eye on my heart rate. Towards the end I dropped down a little too early.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Transition area had a lot of small rocks and sand. It took a little time to clean my feet off before putting my running shoes on. I had my socks pre-rolled so they went on quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Run without socks. I had not run a 10K without socks so I decided to put them on to avoid any issues. I will train more without socks and race the next one without.
Run
  • 53m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

First two miles felt good and smooth. Once I got out of the shade my core temp started rising and I had to slow my pace until the last 1/4 mile. The direct sun and heat had a big impact in my splits.
What would you do differently?:

I think I did as well as I could with the heat impact. I guess I would train a bit more in the afternoon heat to get better acclimated.
Post race
Warm down:

None. Ice in shorts and top. Water poured over head.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) Heat - core temp on the run forced me to slow down. 2) Lack of sleep - 2 month old baby has limited my good nights of sleep.

Event comments:

Started right on time. Lots of volunteers at the aid stations. Race officials were out patrolling the bike course on motorcycles. Live band at the end.
