![]() Swim
Comments: Wow. I thought the swim wouldn't be a big problem, but I was having a rough time of it about halfway through. I'm not sure what happened! I kept a comfortable pace and tried not to push it. I think I did well with that part. But I was ready to be done with the swim. I seeded myself at 10 minutes, but I ended up finishing in 11:17. I had a few people pass me, and I passed a few who stopped for a break. What would you do differently?: I really need to practice doing the crawl for long periods of time. I rely too much on the breaststroke for air and for comfort. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I felt this transition was great. My last tri I got really sick between the swim and the bike portion. This time I took it easier on the swim and walked to transition. I drank plenty of gatoraide and avoided trying to eat anything (my problem last time). Having a tri top and shorts saves so much time - no worrying about getting into running shorts! What would you do differently?: Nothing! ![]() Bike
Comments: The bike portion was a beautiful ride and I really enjoyed it! Some small hills, but nothing terrible. I felt great the whole time. Unfortunately, I just wasn't fast enough. I have a 10-speed bike. It has shifters on the down-tube. It's about 30 years old. I'm already at a disadvantage there. I feel like I'm putting out the same amount of energy as everyone else, but my bike just doesn't go as fast. It was a fun ride though and ended quickly! What would you do differently?: Have a better bike, lol! ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I have a hard time getting off my bike. This time was no different. I walked into transition, but that was part of the plan. I wanted to enjoy this race and it was important that I feel good for it. I didn't want to overdo it or make myself sick. I made sure I drank plenty more water and gatoraide. I REALLY had to go to the bathroom, but they had no portapotties in transition. I'm not sure what was up with that. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Run
Comments: I did not want to overdo it on the run. So I went at what I felt was an easy pace. By the end of the race, I realized I could have picked it up some and been fine. I'm pleased with the time since it is the same time I got on a 5K I did last December. If I can swim and bike first, and STILL get a similar time to a single run, then that is pretty good for me! I thought the run went well - I was definitely tired by the end, and getting a bit overheated. I grabbed some ice at the last aide station and put it down my shirt - this helped cool my down a ton! I finished the run strong and at a sprint pace! What would you do differently?: Push myself a bit harder. I would have been fine. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walking around - nothing special. Found my family, ate some food, finally went to the bathroom! What limited your ability to perform faster: The bike is my biggest handicap. I'm not sure if it's me, or a bike that's just not up to racing. Event comments: I would have given this race a 5 if they had portapotties in the transition area. It's a little hard to believe that a USAT sanctioned race can get away with not having bathrooms (other than inside the aquatic facility) available. Last updated: 2010-03-01 12:00 AM

I woke up at 5am, got dressed and ready for the drive. I was in the car by 5:20. The race was 50 min. away, so I had plenty of time to eat a peanut butter and honey sandwich, banana, and drink some water. I also took an iron supplement. Once I got to the race, I checked in, got my body-marking done, and picked up my chip and race bag. After that I pumped my tires again (I just did it the night before, but they still needed more air when I checked before the race). Once that was done, I headed over to transition to set up my things. That didn't take long, so I checked out the in and out points.
A 200yd swim in the pool about 30 minutes before the start of the race.
