Swim
Comments: This was a good swim for me. I felt strong the whole way through, and had enough open water to swim a good, smooth stroke most of the time. I had to do some navigating around people, but most of the time it wasn't too congested. There was very little chop and the buoys were easy to see, so sighting was easier than usual. What would you do differently?: Push the pace a little harder. Transition 1
Comments: I missed my rack and ran a few racks too far, but otherwise T1 went fine. What would you do differently?: Not run past my rack! Bike
Comments: I really enjoyed the bike course. It was a little hillier than around home, but all little rollers with nothing very steep or long. On the way back, there was a nice fast stretch where it was slightly downhill with a tailwind - so much fun! I started feeling the hills at the end, but didn't feel like I'd toasted my legs for the run. Drank one 20 oz. bottle of water, choked down one hammer gel. I felt thirsty at the end, I should have carried more fluids. What would you do differently?: More fluids, more calories. Transition 2
Comments: Had to put on socks for the run, thanks to the blister I got running sockless the other day. Boo. What would you do differently?: Nothing bad happened here, but I could have moved a little quicker. Run
Comments: I started out well, but the heat got to me on the run. I tried to keep a good, controlled pace for the first couple of miles, planning to pick it up as I went. I missed the mile 1 marker, and was surprised at mile 2 to see I was at 14:38 = too fast. The first mile or so had been shady, but once we were out of the park there was no shade and the sun was getting hot. I drank and poured water on myself at every water station, and that helped a bunch, but I was definitely limited by the heat. If my heart rate went much above 170, I started feeling sick. My pace slowed quite a bit, but I was happy with the overall time considering the conditions. What would you do differently?: Carry my own water when it's that warm. Post race
Warm down: Picked up some drinks and headed for the cooling tent. Ahhh! What limited your ability to perform faster: I am a heat wimp, and I need to do some hill work on the bike. Event comments: Very well organized, good music, lots of friendly volunteers, good security around transition. They could have used 1 or 2 more water stations on the run course, but there was plenty of food and drink at the finish. Last updated: 2010-03-03 12:00 AM

Up early, ate a bagel and some coffee on the drive from the hotel to the race. I wanted to get there early because I'd missed the chance to rack my bike the day before. Got there before transition opened, checked in, and got a decent spot on the rack. Set up, walked transition and checked out the swim course, made the usual visits to the bathroom (flush toilets - woohoo!).
Swam about 100 yds, walked back to transition to get a last snack (mini clif bar).
