Swim
Comments: I knew that in order to swim my best I had to be adequately warmed up and that didn't happen. So I started out slow so as not to get anaerobic and it took about 4 lanes before I could pick up the pace. By then I had been passed a few times and since I knew the start intervals I knew my swim time would really suck. At lane 7 I got passed yet again but was able to draft the rest of the way. Slipped on the ladder coming out but no damage, just fell back into the pool. Thankfully those swimmers who passed me repaid courtesy with courtesy. I stayed against the rope and paused just a second at each wall when they needed to pass and they did so without contact. That was neat. What would you do differently?: Get warmed up better. I will for all future races get my butt in the water and warm up regardles the situation. My breathing and rotation really were poor because I was not ready. Transition 1
Comments: It was a bit nippy when you first came outside and the wind hit you. Also the bright sunlight was a little blinding but just for a second then all was well. What would you do differently?: Don't have the times yet but T-1 felt pretty good. Bike
Comments: Should have had a heck of a bike time but I allowed the wind the get in my head and got a little frustrated. The dang wind was strong and it was gusting and you could never get downwind. It was cross or head the entire loop. But it was consistant in that it was blowing the same all day so everyone had to contend with it. Did manage to pass a bunch of people including those who passed me on the swim and several who swam before me. Did this knowing they would all pass me on the run. Oh well. What would you do differently?: Stayed in a smaller gear during the runs into the wind and found better opportunities to get hydrated. Transition 2
Comments: T-2 went pretty good but I left with an arm full of stuff. Jogged out carrying my hat, race belt, Sloopy Joes bar towel(good luck), and BHS Eagles warm up shirt. (Told the team that to help them win Sat. morn I would run wearing their team shirt, it worked. They won, I didn't.) I looked like a train wreck jogging along trying to pull this shirt over my head while holding all this other stuff. Managed it without dropping anything. What would you do differently?: No more promises to the baseball team. Run
Comments: I am not fast and probably never will be but there were some good things about this run. First, my legs felt great. Owe that to the bike and the couple of bricks I did before the race. I made some small seat adjustments last week and the bike was as near perfect as could be possible. My breathing was pretty good. I tried to stay aerobic and I felt good through the run although I should have drank a little water before leaving T-2. Grabbed a cup of water at the turnaround, just enough to wet the throat a bit. What would you do differently?: Get the complete heart/lung replacement. Then go for the bionic legs. Seriously, 30 years of smoking Marlboro Reds did untold damage to my body. No excuses, I knew better and now I have to live with the results. But I will strive to maximize what cardio/resp capability I have for as long as I can. Post race
Warm down: Went to my vehicle to call and check on the game. We won 6-0. Put on a pair of long warm up pants so all the ladies could control themselves in my presence. What limited your ability to perform faster: General health conditions. Need to drop about 10 lbs before St. A's as weight is still a hindrance. Event comments: I can't emphasize enough how nice it was to meet everyone and to race with members of the BT family. I am very much looking forward to St.A's as much for the race as for the experience. Thanks to Jim, Mike, Shannon, and Janelle, and to the friends and team members with them for making this a memorable event. I didn't do this race last year due to surgery so the closest race I've done for comparasion would be last years Greenville Sprint. Allowing for a 2 mile bike difference I had about a 9 minute improvement in total time. Last updated: 2005-12-12 12:00 AM

This was my first race in which I raced with other BTers and I want to say it added a lot to the enjoyment of the race. Run4yourlife, runnergirl29, bucwilson, and of course "the goddess" were great competitors and triathletes, not to mention all around good peeps.
So I left home early just so I could stop by their motel and say "Good morning". Went on to PI and the MP's were expediting admittance which was a good thing. Pretty much if you had a bike with a race number and it was stuck to your vehicle, they just flagged you through. Went and set up transition and the socializing began. Another neat thing was the number of folks I met while racing last year who were at the race and came by to say "Hello" and talk for a bit. Due to the individual swim starts there was no rush(when you're as slow as me). Found all my peeps and having so many people around that you knew really helped you to relax and not be so anxious about the race. It would be a good practice for all first time triathletes to have a friend or mentor at the race. After setting up and jaw jacking a while we had the pre race briefing and then I went back back to my vehicle where I had a thermos of coffee stashed. Watched a few platoons returning from overnight training. Watched some new recruits learning close order dril at the hands of loving and caring DI's. Oh such fond memories.
Went into the pool to warm up and found the warm up area to be pretty much a gaggle #@$%. Lots of folks standing around in the water socializing. Tried to get a few laps in but it was pretty futile as you couldn't get to the walls and there was even people standing around in the middle of the pool. Oh well they were having a good time. Before I knew it, it was time to line up so I went to the wall and found 3 more people I had raced with last year so we talked a bit before the start.
