Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, slept OK but fitfully last two hours. Stayed up late to watch Betty White on SNL - she slayed!!!

2 bananas, coffee and Diet Mountain Dew for breakfast. Stayed to protein and potato yesterday so no GI issues. I think I have that part of racing figured out. Kathy, Emily and I loaded the car and got a fairly close spot. Brought bike down first and then went back to car to layer up. Very cold and windy.
Event warmup:

None - didn't allow enough time and too cold. Kathy switched to the Duathlon, so we were able to start together.
Run
  • 18m 18s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Shins hurt a great deal. Started out way too fast and had a hard time keeping my breathing. I was at the turnaround before I knew it and paced myself coming back in so I wouldn't completely screw up the bike.
What would you do differently?:

More running in general. Put my pride in my pocket and start out a little slower.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Really hard to decide what to wear. Ended up wearing everything I had, which was the good decision. Didn't take any nutrition or water. Didn't untie my running shoes, bad idea which screwed me up later on.
What would you do differently?:

Need to start practicing transitions.
Bike
  • 45m 33s
  • 10 miles
  • 13.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode enough so far this year that my butt didn't hurt and I didn't need to walk up the hills. That said, I am OK with the result considering the wind and cold.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more, as this is only my second race of the year...
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Now what do I wear? Took off the vest and changed from skull cap to hat. Took some water. Ended up not being that cold since I had a snug tri-top under my long-sleeve tech shirt.
What would you do differently?:

Untie my shoes in T1. Practice transitions.
Run
  • 30m 18s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to take off my hat and several times felt like I was going to blow over. Also, I usually sprint the last 1/2 mile and the combination of the wind and heavy breathing was very uncomfortable.
What would you do differently?:

OK with my effort in context. Tighten my hat before I left T2? Couldn't do it while running.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some bananas, oranges and had a family photo with Senator Scott Brown, who passed me like I was standing still on the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fighting some tonsillitis and somewhat under-trained (got that career thing, you know ;)

Event comments:

I chose to sign up for the duathlon because the weather is iffy around Mother's Day here and I am not a strong enough swimmer to do this race in this kind of weather. I think Tim's races are very well organized and he pays great attention to the athletes and the details. In the individual results, I show as 3/4 in my AG, so despite the lack of tangible hardware (they calculated the leader results some other way - who knows?), I will score this as a win. Despite the cold weather and wind, I had a good time. Plenty of racks, the check-in was efficient, plenty of water and potties. Caterer was OK, food was good but he was understaffed and insisted on tea-spooning the food out himself.

Smarter minds than mine will figure out what the heck happened out there in the water.
