Swim
Comments: Great conditions. Slight wind and not a lot of current. Normal chop was almost nonexistant today. Just concentrated on staying smooth and maintaining cadence. Drafting was really hard as a lot of paddlers would just slow down and force you to pass. Did that and tried not to be passed. What would you do differently?: Buy a faster kayak. My ebay special is stable but slow. Transition 1
Comments: Had to remove spray skirt and lifejacket. Support staff did a great job pulling us from the water to keep the running shoes dry....well for a while. Run
Comments: Having some mile markers would have helped. What would you do differently?: Be taller and weigh less. Oh yea, and be younger, a lot younger. Post race
Warm down: Immediately got a stretching massage courtesy of a local PT company and the PT working the race was a friend of my secretary so I got right to the table. Wife met me with a thermos of chicken noodle soup and having just spent the previous two hours with the secretary I was glad that was all she met me with. What limited your ability to perform faster: Where do I start. Event comments: I think one of the mistakes I made was not hydrating or using a gel while paddling. I usually rig my camelback to the boat with an extender tube but this year I carried a water bottle. Then I decided to wear the spray skirt and that limited the access to my water bottle. Then as it turns out the competition is so tight that no one is stopping to drink or suck down a gel so I just kept paddling. During transition I gulped a drink and a quick squeeze of Hammer Gel and that was it for the entire race. I definitely was feeling the effects by the end of the run. Last updated: 2005-12-12 12:00 AM

This race is as much a social event as a race so I milled around visiting and introducing myself to strangers as either former Kona champs or dead rock stars.
The head was about 3/4 mile away so jogging to the head and back was my warmup.
