Pre-race routine:

I arrived in White Lake the day before and got to meet some Beginner Triathlete folks who had just finished a half ironman. They finished the half when it was about 90 degrees.I stayed at Langstons motel. It was not great but the room was clean. I brought my own food because there are not many restaurants around.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike from the motel to the race site-about 2 miles away. Parking is pretty limited at the race site. Ran a little to get my heart rate up and listened to music on my ipod.Ran into Tarina-one of my oldest daughter's classmates. That was fun. She has 2 kids! Boy, I am getting old.

Got in the water with my wetsuit about 15 minutes before my swim time. Water felt great.
Swim
  • 23m 7s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim was took 3 minutes longer than the swim 2 weeks ago at Belews Lake. I paniced at the beginning and could not get my breathing right. It took me about 10 minutes to get into any kind of rhythm.I bumped into a few people and I think that messed me up.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swimming in the lake with people bumping into me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

My transitons are always slow.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice running and biking without socks. that will probably save me about 30 seconds in transition.
Bike
  • 49m 13s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode hard on the bike. I like a flat course!
What would you do differently?:

more bike time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

About average for me.
What would you do differently?:

Practice my transitions.
Run
  • 30m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hot.I took a plastic water bottle with me and poured the water on my head during the first half of the run. That helped a lot. I will try to do this on future runs.
I left it all out on the course. I tied to break 30 minutes and almost made it.
What would you do differently?:

I am slow. I will need to lose more weight if I want to get faster. I am not sure I want to do that.
Post race
Warm down:

hugged Sallie who was working the race. She was a real encouragement to me.Nobody else from our running group was at the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

get more comfortable with my swimming.

Event comments:

White Lake is a beautiful venue especially the lake itself. It is about 10 feet deep and has a sandy bottom. You can actually see the bottom for the whole swim.
