Swim
Comments: Was hoping to wear a wetsuit but water was too warm to be wetsuit legal. A few people wore them but they were disqualified. I probably would have been about 5 minutes faster with a wetsuit. I couldn't really figure out the course so I just followed the folks in front of me. This swim was my longest lake swim ever. I am glad I made it. I told myself if I could make it through the swim,I would finish the race no matter what Transition 1
Comments: T1 was faster than I thought. It may be because I forgot to put on my helmet. They sent me back when I was mounting the bike with no helmet. Bike
Comments: I tried not to push it on the bike so I would have a little left for the run. Drank 2 bottles of water with perpetuem and 1 water bottle that they passed out at the 12 mile mark. What would you do differently?: My bike time was about what I expected. My bike fitness is not great. I need to do more hills and longer bike rides. Transition 2
Comments: I was starting to feel the heat. What would you do differently?: Maybe rest morer in T2 to get ready for a HOT run? Run
Comments: It was hot. It took me about 20 minutes longer than I expected. I could not get going. It felt like about 95 degrees on that asphalt road. I tried to run some on the grass shoulder. That helped a little. What would you do differently?: Most of my running is early morning. When I train for longer races, I need to run some in the heat of the day to be better prepared. Post race
Warm down: stretched, drank water and a coke, ate potato chips, talked to friends. Also, waited around for awards. Figured I would get one since there were only 3 in my age group. A lot of life is just showing up! What limited your ability to perform faster: bike fitness and heat Event comments: Kerr lake was my first Olympic Triathlon. I am glad I could do it with friends. Roger Church was especially helpful since he has been doing triathlons for a long time and has done this particular race about 6 times. My mantra for this race was : "head down, heart up"(Thanks to my friend and yoga teacher,Ann). I needed a lot of heart to finish this race. When I started looking at my watch or eyeing a potential competitor, I gently reminded myself, it was all about heart! Last updated: 2010-03-07 12:00 AM

We stayed in a house near the race site. The guy who owns the house is a friend of Roger's who I did the race with.
One of the things that came up at dinner on Saturday night was that a guy staying on the property a few years ago died of a heart attack during the swim part of the race. That is all I needed to hear!
We had 4 of us from Greensboro who stayed there and did the race. The guy who owned the house was my age and graduated Carolina the same year(1972)I did.
Had breakfast about 6:00-breakfast cookie, banana, and perpetuem sport drink.
Glad I did not eat more because of the heat.
biked from parking area,ran a little,and swam a little
