Swim
Comments: Thought my start was good. Did not go out to fast and found my groove somewhere past 300+m. The segment between the 2 orange (turn) bouys seemed to go slow, and the longer last leg was ok, but did experience some suttle thigh cramping in the right hip flexor while 200+m out from the finish. What would you do differently?: Could have pushed it harder, but being my first Olympic distance, I just took my time. Next time will try to get the swim down to something closer to 30 mins total. Transition 1
Comments: During the 200+m run to transition, I began to have some real cramping issues with my hip flexors on both sides, (more painful on the left) as well as lower groin muscles. So, I had to take my time getting thru transition, and finally felt good enough to trot out to the start of the bike portion. What would you do differently?: Not sure what to do about cramping, and being this was my first Olympic distance, I was content to take my time and enjoy the whole race. Bike
Comments: I was careful as several bikers had crashed, and probably did not push as hard in order to finish safely. What would you do differently?: Probably need to ride 25 mile practice loops more often, as the 15 mile stints were fine, but need to do more. Transition 2
Comments: Was worried about possible calf cramping, but it did not happen this time. What would you do differently?: I took too much time getting the watch off the bike and getting it setup properly for my run segment. Run
Comments: Again as this was my first Olympic distance, I did not hammer it as I was not sure what to expect. I usually run a 10K in about 1:00 to 1:05 so putting up a 1:06+, I felt pretty good about it. What would you do differently?: I slowed down to help a fellow Clydesdale who was really struggling on the hills. His name was Tom and I did what Barbara did for me when I "bonked" on the run/steep hills at the 'Brierman' tri last fall. Talking to him helped get his mind off the hills and I finished just 6 seconds ahead of him at the end. Post race
Warm down: Was able to get some cold gatorade after the finish line, and a casual walk back to transition allowed me to cool down slowly. What limited your ability to perform faster: Me. I was just enjoying the whole event. Next time I would prefer to participate in an age group that would not be at the end of the race. I believe that would have pushed me to compete harder. Event comments: I will definately be back to do this again next year, now that I know what to expect. I enjoyed myself very much. Last updated: 2010-03-08 12:00 AM

You are required to rack your bike the night before the race. Rain started late afternoon and continued through out the night. Transition was very muddy the next morning. Woke up @ 4:30 to leave the house at 5:05am. Stopped to grab a bagel w/ cream cheese and bananas for breakfast. Traffic the last mile was completely jammed. Wound up going around the backway through the neighborhood to park close to the entrance of the park. That gave me slightly less than an hour to set up transition in the rain. Fortunately the race director pushed back the start time by 15 mins to accomodate the late arrivers.
Ate 2 bananas, and finished off a pPowerade as I was getting dressed. Under 30 mins to the start the rain stopped, but everything was soaked. Put on the wet suit to stay warm and did some light stretching. They closed transition @ 6:45, yet my wave was not scheduled to go off until 8:18am. Walked over to the swim start area and continued to stretch ... and wait. Fortunately, the rain stopped for the rest of the race.
