Swim
Comments: This was a good swim for me. I kept going the whole time and I flipped over and back-stroked when I felt the need. I am not a good swimmer and I don't practice so, to me, it went really well. It was a bot choppy but overall it was good What would you do differently?: Keep swimming freestyle. Once I get winded it is difficult to maintain a pace and breathing correctly is pretty hard. I would like to train more for this for sure. But you do what you can, right! Transition 1
Comments: My suit slipped off pretty well. I tried to go slow and methodical and not panic. I had to peel it off my heels but I had practiced 4 or 5 times this past week to get it off. I ran out of transition and I know I passed 2-3 guys in my wave because they were putting socks and shoes on at the rack. I ran past the line and mounted. I got up to speed and got one foot in. Then there was a slight uphill near the parking lot so after that I got the other in and threw my sunglasses on. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: This is where my race really got good!! I have been biking a lot. I didn't push too hard and the last 5 miles were tough because of the wind but I was passing people like crazy. I never felt like I was near redline and I was actually thinking during the whole ride that I needed to save myself as much as I could for the run. If you are in a race please keep to the right. I had to ride a good 1/2 of this race in the opposite lane because people were riding 2 abreast and even when they were alone they were near the centerline. I know that if I swam better I would not have to pass as many people but this was a bit much. :Rant over: What would you do differently?: Nothing. I stayed within my abilities and I felt ok off the bike. Transition 2
Comments: I have been practicing this every time I ride. It has helped significantly. I passed 3 or 4 more guys in this transition that I came in off the bike with. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Everything went well. Run
Comments: My plan went like this. Mile 1: Get your legs moving a strong cadence. Mile 2: find your pace. Mile 3: If it feels right, pick up the pace and put out a strong effort. Everything went according to plan! How cool is that?!? I found my comfort zone before the turn around and I just kept working on picking my pace up. By the 2 mile sign I really tried to pick it up. I was really happy with this. What would you do differently?: I need to get in more bricks but my training schedule is all based on IM Racine 70.3 so I am not worrying about speed/quality workouts as of yet. That will come in the next few weeks. Other than that I feel good about this run. I am really shooting for a sub-20 min. and I think by next year I will be able to get it. Post race
Warm down: Walked around with Jennie and Caleb. I ate a burrito and Caleb and I shared a bit of banana. I also slammed a Coke and, man, was it good lol. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of quality brick workouts and speed work. I know I have a decent base in place but I need to concentrate on speed for these sprint races. Event comments: This was a PR for me in a lot of ways. The swim was much better than last year at this race. I actually swam the whole time, fast no, but really good for me.My bike is my best sport by far and I have improved that a lot in the past few months. I know with more training I can really crush it. I did fairly well on the run especially after the effort I was able to put out on the bike portion. My transitions have really improved with a lot of practice and from reading all of the helpful posts on this website (Oh, and ST too) Thanks everyone for the helpful info that you post on here for all of us newbies. Alarm went off at 4:15. I had a PB&J, banana and water. Filled bottles etc..Showered and we woke Caleb @ 5:30 and we were out the door.
Set up transition after body marking. Then I jogged for about 10 min. Some woman told me it was 6:40 so I threw on my wetsuit and headed to the beach. I was worried because the water was so cold last year, but it was actually very warm. I swam out to the outer ring of the swim area and swam a lap across and then headed back in. I actually felt fine which was surprising because I don't do any swimming at all. Then we waited. We were wave #4 so I knew I had time to talk w/Jennie and Caleb and give them a kiss goodbye. They wished me luck and I went at waited on the beach.
