Swim
Comments: Swim canceled due to lightening. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: I felt really good about my bike. Much stronger than I expected to feel actually. I was passing people like crazy. I thought, given the time trial start that people would be passing me like mad. I think probably 10 people zipped passed me on the bike. I did the first 4 or so miles comfortably, then I heard Josh's voice in my head telling me that since the bike course was reduced, he was just gonna put the hammer to it. I was still alive after mile 4 - feeling good, so I went for it. I wanted to see if I pushed it really hard on the bike, what would happen on my run. This seemed as good a time to try that as any. I even passed a few people going up Devil's Hill and that felt nice. What would you do differently?: I don't think given that it was my first race, that I'd do anything differently. My normal biking pace is 17mph - this was 18.5 - I thought that was good enough. I guess I will need to learn to drink more. I did enough for this race - but might not have been enough on a longer race. Transition 2
Comments: I can't jump off my bike - I am slow coming into transition. I run with my bike but I'm slow at that too. What would you do differently?: Not sure. I'm trying to focus on the swim bike run first - I don't think I added any unnecessary time here. Run
Comments: I felt pretty slow to start. Was glad I'd decided to leave the 310xt on the bike so that I could just try and focus on how I felt and not dog myself about moving too slowly. After a mile or so, I definitely started to hit my comfy zone and pushed it. It's funny because when I did the course a month before the race, the hill at mile 2.5 killed me. (of course that day I'd done the full 27 mile bike course). On race day, that hill was nothing. I was shocked when I came up to the turn around because I thought I still had to run up the killer hill. I also got a big boost of energy passing Josh and he high five'd me. That felt good. After the turnaround I just tried to kick it and have fun. It was feeling good to finish my first race after all the prep - even though it wasn't a tri. What would you do differently?: First water station - tried to run and drink. Got SO little liquid in. Hadn't over drunk on the bike so I knew I'd need it - so at the next couple I stopped, took big gulps and pressed on. I did the right thing for the time - I need to practice with a fuel belt see if I can drink out of the little bottles. Post race
Warm down: Stopped immediately after the finish line to talk to Mike and Colin and wait for Karen. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience. Event comments: Despite being REALLY bummed that the swim was canceled AND the bike had 10 miles lopped off, this was still a good experience for me. I'd never been in a bike race. The night before I was SO nervous I was a MESS. Hopefully even though the swim didn't happen, I've not gotten some of those out of control nerves out of the way. Overall I was happy with my performance. I'm a slow runner, I knew this going in... what I didn't anticipate was that my biking was faster than I thought. At the Goodale's Monday night rides I am the slowest one by far and I feel like a dork - so I thought sure bike would be my limiter. I do wish I could get better results from the website though - like my place in each event and overall place and such - I am very disappointed that I cannot get that. It was a mess. The thunder and lightening storm threw everything off. It was a cluster of craziness. I tried to get enough food in but I hadn't planned on a 90 minute delay.
None at all. Nothing. Nada. We spent the time crouched in a bathroom avoiding the lightening.
