Pre-race routine:

Friday:
Drove up to Gunstock on Friday. Got in setup camp. Ate. Registered, checked out the sparse expo. On a note there was way too much m-Dot merchandise for my liking there. Went back to Camp ate more, had some wine/marshmallows and went to bed.

Saturday:
Woke up at 4:30am. Ate drank some water and drove over to volunteer on the bike course for Timberman Sprint. Cold morning, and a cold night. Had fun, directed the athletes at the2nd turn out of the park where I told them to go straight out, and on the way back to make a right. Did some light hiking. Got in quick S/B/R ate food and went to Walmart to buy socks for cheap arm warmers just in case.

Ate more, had wine and went to bed.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 3:30am, it was raining. Had to take down and pack the tent in the rain since 'checkout' was 11am, and we were headed to Portland, ME after the race. Got to Ellacoya pretty early, got some great parking. Setup transition went back to the car and got a quick 30min nap in.

Waited around forever using the bathroom more times than normal. Eventually got some swimming in before heading out at 8am vs the 7am Pro start.
Swim
  • 38m 6s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Waves went every 5min. I Started at 8am. Race started at 7am. I honestly thought I put down a much faster time. I started right at the front and immediately started swimming. Problem was everyone else started walking.

Swim was mayhem. The entire way out and back was crowded. Tons of people from earlier waves still in the water. Tons of people floating or breast stroking.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

A bit slow. The day before was a good 10degrees cooler, so I had gone to Walmart bought long socks and cut the tips for homemade arm warmers. I had not thought to bring any and rarely wear the pairs I own. $5 vs $50 at the expo. Ended up not wearing them.

So guy stopped in transition right in front of me running out. I almost took both of us out.
What would you do differently?:

Hustle more. Long transition run.
Bike
  • 2h 57m 21s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I crashed pretty bad last year, so I took it very easy on the course. Once I got past the point where I crashed I picked up the pace some. Course reminds me of riding close to home, except out descents are more straight forward.

I definitely got passed on the descents a few times. Very busy out on the course.

Had it been dry I probably would have pushed more. Only stood on a single climb. Truly not a difficult bike course.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder. Get more outdoor riding in. Practice high speed descents in the rain?
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Long run with the bike. Perfect flying dismount.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 50m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run. Cruised the first lap. Started pushing on the 2nd but had my 2nd bathroom stop, pretty long but was flying after. Race nutrition was perfect, I blame food from the 2 days prior.

While the bike has a few good hills, the run course should be described as rolling. Really 1 long hill and 1 steep hill, overall a pretty easy run.

What would you do differently?:

Not visit the bathroom twice? Pickup the speed a bit earlier on.
Post race
Warm down:

It was raining. Long massage line, so I walked around a bit, got somefood, had a beer, but I was cold by then so I changed, hung out for a bit and hit the road after a while to drive on to Portland.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wine the day before.
Waking up at 330am, because it was raining and we were camping. Had to take down the tent in the rain. However we got to the race site early and I got to get an almost 30min nap in the car prerace.

I was pretty burned out 2 weeks ago. I realized this was not an A race, I wanted to have a good time.

Event comments:

Great race. Claimed numbers for the weekend were 4000 athletes total, with 2700 for the 70.3. Results show just under 2200 starters. It was packed. Good race overall. My goal was to have a great swim but that failed.
