Run
Comments: The gun went off and I started running, but I didn't feel as good as I would have liked. I felt like I was having a difficult time getting my breathing down and didn't feel as good as I would have liked. I had a fairly fast first kilometer, since over half of it was downhill. The second kilometer was a more reasonable pace, with the wind still at my back. However, the second kilometer mark was on a corner and from that point on I was running into the wind. It was also at about this time that not catching my breath and not feeling strong came into play. I slowed down when I should have tucked in behind someone to block the wind and keep my pace strong. This is pretty much how I felt for the third and fourth kilometers, and where I got passed by a few people, including a guy with his dog. On the stretch to the finish, I was feeling a little better than before, and moved past a couple people who had passed me earlier. However, I was back to the hill from the start and the kilometer time suffered from having to go uphill. I sprinted to the line so I wouldn't get caught by someone behind me, and then tried to catch my breath finally. I wasn't able to catch the dog, but if I would have had 20 more meters I would have. Guess I'll have to beat that dog next year! What would you do differently?: For a lot of the race, I was running by myself and was taking the full force of the wind. I should have tucked in behind someone and tried to go a little faster than I did to take advantage of the draft. As it was, I wound up going slower than I probably could have due to the wind and just mentally due to not having someone to try to keep up with in the third and fourth kilometers. Post race
Warm down: All I did for cool-down is do some light jogging after I had my breath back. What limited your ability to perform faster: As previously mentioned, running by myself in the wind, not trying to stay with a faster runner, and just mentally and physically off my best. Event comments: Considering this race was pretty much just started by a guy out of his garage, it was really well organized. Everything went off on time, the course was well marked, and volunteers kept everything running smoothly. There were plenty of door prizes, snacks after the race, and a minimum of fuss all around for registration and bib pickup. Last updated: 2010-03-14 12:00 AM

I woke up and got my stuff together for the race, but didn't really have much food to have a decent breakfast. I had a powerbar but probably should have thought ahead and had some bagels on hand. I got picked up by a buddy, and we drove out to the race. Once there, we picked up our bibs and chips, and met up with the rest of the time. I got told that I would be running with two of the faster guys there as part of a team, which put a bit of pressure on me not to do terrible.
For warm-up, I jogged the first 750m or so of the course and back to the start. I did my usual stretches and shucked layers of clothes until I felt like I was appropriately dressed for the slight chill and heavy winds. I then made my way to the start of the group and waited for the start. There was bit of a delay as there was a problem with the timing, but it was fixed within a minute.
