Pre-race routine:

Stayed up a little too late the night before as we were at a friend's house playing cards. Good times but made it tough to get out of bed in the morning. Got up, got showered and ate a bowl of oatmeal with some coffee. Got the rest of my stuff together and then had a piece of toast with peanut butter. Cup of coffe for the road and we were off.
Event warmup:

Got there with only about 25 minutes to get ready before the 10K (which my wife Kristine was running) so I dropped her off at registration and went to park the car. Met back up with her and she got changed while I got rid of my breakfast! Then we walked down to the race start, I kissed her good luck and then jogged to the car to put our stuff in the car and jogged back. Talked to twinracer and some other tri club guys while waiting for the half to start. Did some light stretching. Went back and forth on deciding to run with my pull over on or not but ditched it when I saw that others were going without them...glad I did!

Comments:

Started about 6-7 rows back which was pretty close to the front. Came out of the gates a little fast which is what I ususally do. Tried to slow it down some and that got me back on track for an 8 minute pace. Held that well for the first three miles and thought I should cut it just a little more to save something for the end. Looked at my watch after lap 4 and saw and 8:29 pace...whoa! Slowed down a little too much! Picked it back up and got back around the 8:10 mark. Pretty much held around 8 for the rest of the time until the last 2 miles where I picked up the pace. It helped that there was some decent downhills at the end of the race, espceially the last 1.5 miles or so. Had an organge gu just before the aid station at mile 5 and then another just before the aid station at mile 10.5. Chased both with water and that was the only drinking I did during the run.

PS...Kristine had a 30 sec PR on her 10K time.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training and improve for the future.

Felt really good about this run. Nailed my pacing and felt great the whole time. Makes me wonder if I left something out there but probably not much. This was 4+ minute PR from my first half marathon in Nov 2009 (different course) with the big difference being being good pacing through out (and a 7:28 mile 13 vs. and 11:30 mile 13 on the last race!).

Post race
Warm down:

Talked with some friends, some easy stretching, drank water and ate some cookies and a bananna. We hung out for about 45 minutes and then headed home to cut the grass!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my second half marathon and I feel like I ran to my ability. Would like to go faster but who wouldn't!!!

Event comments:

This is a great local race with over 800 people participating in the two distances. Drink stations on the course were a little too spread out for me although I only utilized 2 of them. Post race food/drink was a little light...only water to drink and an assortment of cookies, fruit and bagles (but nothing to put on the bagles---peanut butter ran out very early). Massages were being offered after the race but I didn't participate.

Overall, it is a very good race. Well organized and the volunteers do a great job on the course.

Course: Course is all rolling hills with one decent sized climb at around mile 9.5. Very few flat spots...seemed to be always climbing or descending. Last 1.5 miles or so is downhill which feels great at the end of the race! Course only a closed course in a few spots...mostly running on the road with traffic. Good course management from the volunteers and the cars were all respectful to the runners.
