Run
Comments: This was a great run for me. For most of my training, I have been a 11 min mile guy. But on hills. I started out slow. It being my first race ever, I was nervous about starting out too quick. Everyone warmed me about it. I ran my first 6 miles at basically my 11 min mile pace which is where most of the people in my group were. The longest hill was around mile 6 according to the map. Once I got to mile 7, I was a little surprised that the biggest hill was nothing compared to my hills in my back yard so I started to pick up my pace. I did a 10 min mile then basically the last 6 miles at 9:00 each. I was passing people like crazy in the last 6 miles. I really believe I could have ran most of the race at a 9.5 min mile pace. I was feeling good and everything was working well.. Im very happy with the time but I can see where I can do better.... What would you do differently?: Stretch more during my training runs and I would have drove the course to see how bad the hills were. Other than that, my nutrition was perfect as I had two gels during the race (one at 4.5 mile and one at 9 mile). I had a good big of water during the race and three or four cups of gatorade. Post race
Warm down: After getting my medal and my silver shinny thing to wrap around me, we (me and my two friends) walked almost a mile back to the hotel. :) Did a little stretching and went to eat. My Garmin said I burned 2678 calories so I needed some replenishment. Also, my Garmin said I did 13.25 miles which would have put me under a 10 min mile pace but whose counting.? :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really. I think this was a great effort by a guy who was 300 pounds just a little over a year ago. Dropping 85 pounds, getting my body back in shape and doing something like this is as good as it gets for me. Event comments: 8 weeks to my HIM in Orlando. I had better get busy. Lots to do Last updated: 2010-03-21 12:00 AM

This was actually my first race ever. I know its crazy but I have a thing for jumping in with both feet. My next jump is the HIM in Orlando in May. Go figure.
We stayed in Atlanta overnight since we are so far away. Woke up around 5:00am as we were only a half a mile from the starting line. Got a shower, had some water and stretched out. Around 6:00, we headed over to the race. I had a Cliff bar on the way over as I was still not real hungry from the dinner on the night before. I usually do not eat a big breakfast so it was normal for me. I carried one 16.9 ounce water bottle full to the starting line and ended up holding on to it through mile 6 or so.
I stretched and got my legs loose. A few butterflies but nothing huge. I was really overwhelmed with the participation of the event. Almost 20,000 people total. Half marathoners and marathoners...
