Swim
Comments: This is the swim time you get when you put the least amount of training in that you can. I started out in the back left, walked about 100 yards out and started to swim. I swam nice and easy the whole time I was never out of breath or concerned about my heart rate being too high. I probally swam 1.5, because I'm a crazy zig zag navigator. What would you do differently?: Go to the pool and lake more often and practice. Transition 1
Comments: Wet suit strippers were great, light jog back to transition, dried my feet real nice, put on my socks, glasses, and my helmet. But the helmet did not fit my head. the size setting must have changed on the way to NH, so I needed to take a few extra seconds to get that together. What would you do differently?: Check helmet before starting race. Bike
Comments: Saw the wife and kids at the turn onto 11B, then put my mind into "riding zone". Half way up the mile 10 big hill I heard the siren and thought someone already went down. As the police car came flying down the hill, followed by a pace car then Andy Potts, he was flying!!!!! That was cool.Just took my time no real problems on the hills. Passed a few people and got passed. Stopped at the halfway, took wiz got some water. Started to rain on the return right after the Speedway. Dropped my chain, but was a quick fix. Stopped at the next station and got a gatoraid and banana. Saw someone on the opposite side of the road getting put on a stretcher, not good. Felt good going up the last set of hills. Back brake stated to rub when I got out of the saddle and had it in the easy gear. Didn't bother to check it out, said "F it" and kept riding. Felt great the last 5 miles picked up the pace a bit, but my a** said it was time to get off. What would you do differently?: Didn't check out the course before hand, probally would have helped. Just used what I remembered from reading all the posts. Could have riden harder, but being my first HIM I wanted to finish and not feel like death on the way home. Ride harder on the first half of the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Walked to rack to make sure my legs were good. Dried my feet, put on fresh socks and pulled out my dry running shoes from my plastic bag. Rain had stopped. Legs felt good. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: Legs felt really good. First two miles I ran 8:15, 8:20. Pee break, then my stomach started to feel like it needed food. Stopped at the turn around and ate some pretzels from the bubble lady. The next house down some guy was stretching his legs and using someones mailbox to steady himself and snapped the pole in half. I told him it was like that and to keep running. I then saw a guy throwing up, don't look, don't look, I looked and had a little gag. Made it to the turn around and began to feel it. As I started running mile 7 and 8 I thought to myself will it be the end of the world if I walk when I feel like it or should I push myself until I can't think. Well I did a few road races this summer where I was running sub 7's and felt alful afterwards. I spent some cash on the race and staying up in NH for the weekend and wanted to be able to remember the run, have fun, and feel good later. So I walked the turn around and the large hill, talked to some people, had a snowball fight with the hockey team, had two guys chase be down the road blowing those damn horns from the world cup (which was great and probally would not have happened if I was too serious). Finished the last two miles feeling great, ran down the chute, saw my family, got my medal, not from Chrissy Wellington, but from someone's grandmother (LOL) which was still great. What would you do differently?: Nothing, maybe run faster if I was going to win money.LOL Post race
Warm down: Took some pictures with the kids, kissed my wife. She went back to pick up the van at Gunstock, just in time, there was a giant crowd by the time I walked out to the road. When she left I went and jumped into the lake, changed and packed up my stuff. Headed over and drank a cold beer!! Had a bite to eat and walked out to get picked up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Never racing this distance and never seeing the course. I did what I came to do. Complete the race, have some fun with my family. I've heard and read a lot about this race the last few years. I had a great time. I was always thought I would never be able to complete the swimming never mind finish this race. That people that do these long distances must be nuts!!! But after reading all of the race reports I knew I just needed to practice and pace myself. Last year after Cranberry I knew I could pull off the 70.3. Next year lets try the full at Lake Placid. I will need to put in alot more time overall but I am looking forward to it. Event comments: Great time, people were great. Felt bad for the people waiting for the bus to leave the park. Thanks to all who have posted race reports and info on the Timberman thread they really helped. Last updated: 2010-03-24 12:00 AM

Stayed at Christmas Tree Island resort. Room was right on the water (Paugus Bay). Arrived Friday night, put the kids to bed and the wife and I had a couple of beers on the deck. The moon was lighting up the whole lake, it was great. Sat. let the kids swim, had lunch then went to pick up the packet at Gunstock. Walked around, kids climbed the rock wall. Back to the room, attached all my numbers, checked the bike out one last time then brought it over to Ellacoya. I was pumped when I saw all the people at Gunstock, but when I saw all of the racks, bikes, gates, swim markers and heard the music; I was really pumped. Drove back to Gunstock for the pre race meeting. Back to the hotel, took the kids out for a row boat ride and swim. Dinner, Weirs beach for icecream, then back to the place to call it a night. Woke up at 4am, had an O water with an Energy Arbonne fizzy, some hard boiled eggs, powerbar, and a bannana. Left at 4:30 for the park, wife droped me off about 200 yards from the entrance, and I walked the rest of the way so she could have an easy u-turn. Set up transition, walked around watched the pro's set up, then off to the start.
Watched the pro's start. It's great when that cannon goes off and all the people who shit their pants because they are not ready for that loud bang. LOL. I was not going off until 7:40 so I just watched the other waves, at 7:25 had a Hammer Gel, ziped up the suit and warmed up with a little swim.
