Age Group Rank = 5/37
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am, ate breakfast (oatmeal, eggs, orange juice), showered, got in car, drove to Champaign, packet pickup, set up transition, warm up.
Event warmup:

5 mins on bike, 300 M swim.
Swim
  • 05m 29s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Still feel like I could have swam faster.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster, maybe more warm up, but it was getting dangerous by the time we got there.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Not going to lie, should have been faster.
What would you do differently?:

If I had known I was going to lose my water anyway, I wouldn't have bothered to take the tail section of my bike. Would have had shoes clipped in and done a CX mount.
Bike
  • 30m 1s
  • 11.1 miles
  • 22.19 mile/hr
Comments:

9th overall on the bike...this was the only place I got passed all race. By my teammate, who finished 3rd overall and is a former Cat1 racer. I'm ok with that.
What would you do differently?:

yeah, not much I would have done differently. Maybe pushed a little bit harder early on.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Easy to dismount when you don't have a water bottle anymore.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 22m 3s
  • 3.05 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

My fastest 5k yet. ~1 minute faster than my previous stand-alone 5k PR. I was pushing hard, couldn't talk much except to ask the volunteers which way I should go.
What would you do differently?:

Bury myself a little bit more. I felt like I was going to puke at the end, but I didn't...probably means I had a little bit more in me.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around looking for Steve, got a massage, ate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much.

Event comments:

In their second year I think the U of I triathlon team has done a good job. Very solid early-season race.

Definitely my best placing ever. I really felt like I was moving out there, which I apparently was. Fastest personal run and bike splits for me. Only person who passed me was my friend/teammate Steve who was 3rd overall. 5 in my AG at a college triathlon isn't bad at all.
