Pre-race routine:

PB Bagel and 2 Kiwi (out of bananas) around 7ish
24oz gatorade en route
Event warmup:

Body looseners
Did some OD pace jogging up to Marine drive, once an hour before and again about 20 min before, plus some OD jogging around parking.
Powerbar gel shot 20m before gun
Run
  • 22m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Time around mile #1 around 7:15 (glanced at watch)
Time around mile #2 around 13:50 (glanced at watch)
Run felt very good, technique felt solid
Wore stocking cap, workout sweatshirt and rain jacket over armwarmers. Bulked me up a bit but did feel warm and comfortable
What would you do differently?:

Goal was to hit 7:00 min/mi - missed it on last mile, feel like maybe should have pushed a bit harder
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Did not have shoes clipped to bike because of weather, a slight but of fumbling on velcro straps but only a couple of seconds maybe, also had towels on saddle and helmet to stop rain, and threw towel over running shoes - this added a few seconds but under the conditions felt pretty good
What would you do differently?:

Practice jump on and clip into bike with shoes on in case this happens in future with weather
Did bike leg in big ring but started in small ring, may need to keep in big ring in front
Bike
  • 45m 46s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.66 mile/hr
Comments:

First race on Felt TT bike - overall was happy with experience
Cross winds really screwed up my time - noticed down below 18mph at some moments, not used to racing in those, way more than last year (or maybe I noticed more being on this lighter bike) Did compare some top folks 2009 and 2010 bike times and looks like wind slowed everyone down to some degree
Also with road issues felt sometimes like was weaving around lane markers to find a sweet spot
Did pass several bikes and each of those felt good
All of this leg in big ring

What would you do differently?:

Have the cyclecomputer set to watch cadence - that was a mistake and did cadence by feel
Put electrolyte not water in bottle - try to get more drinking in, didn't get as much as had thought
Hip joints got saddle sore around mile 10 or so, was okay after bike but may want another saddle in future
couple times held back before passes to avoid drafting, probably shouldn't have done that
On turnaround #2 unclipped L foot but shouldn't have and didn't need to, that cost a couple seconds

Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Had to run through T2 in shoes, was nervous about that but ended up not being an issue at all, was able to trip-trip jog all way to rack
Getting running shoes on was a cinch
Had calves cramping on both legs when getting into shoes - was able to get going without slowing down but need to work on hamstring strength

What would you do differently?:

Try to get off moving bike not stopping bike and then go
Run
  • 24m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Quads were burning pretty good at start of run, felt again like good pace & technique but really had to keep focus one step at a time and had to fight body's messages to cash it in
Got some electrolytes at turnaround, this time didn't slow me down but felt I needed that since didn't have any juice on bike
Had enough gas for a kick over finish line
Got out on run course about 50 yards when passed the event winner, that felt good to be out on the last leg before anyone finished, could hear his finish time around 1:12
What would you do differently?:

Pace was a few seconds better than last year on R2 and held off 8:00 min pace, but still a big difference between runs - need to work on this, definately need to get more energy from drink/gels before this run starts
Post race
Warm down:

Electrolytes and water off stands
Walking around, eventually stretching
Did not feel as hammered as last year

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cross winds on bike
Weather conditions added transition time and some bulk
Needed cadence monitor set on bike so don't guess that by feel
Need to hydrate on bike
Probably need more ST work on quads and calves
Also had changed training so did not peak before this race, think would have performed a bit better if had peaked by now but that's okay

Event comments:

Timing chip fell off on R2, but event folks were able to still get my times. Did a great job of keeping me informed about it as they were trying to get the data.
The weather really did make things more of a pain on this race, but shouldn't be an issue by summer events
Points earned per Race Center scoring - 81.03 points
Race folks did announce this was worst weather in race history, so won't let that deter me from doing race again in future
