Swim
Comments: The course was very very choppy, as I understand it the race officials modified the course for the later waves because of this. I think they cut off 500 meters but still gave them credit for swimming the whole distance - skews the results a bit, oh well. What would you do differently?: I was fairly happy with my swim actually. This was my first open water swim with no wet suit, and my first Olympic race - so I can't complain. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1 for me, a little more disoriented coming out of the water than I thought I would be. Thank goodness there were volunteers there for us to grab on to while climbing up the steep stairs out of the water. I still can't get over how disoriented your body is after 30+ mins of swimming, it's like my body is telling me "NO! I don't want to run! I'm going to mess with our equilibrium because you're making us do this!" At transition, I chatted a few moments with the guy next to me, it was his first race and was a little confused. I gave him as many tips as I knew then gave him my water to rinse off his feet - they were covered in mud and sand, wished him luck and I took off. What would you do differently?: Nothing as of now. Bike
Comments: Saw a horrible crash, a girl went to move to her left to pass, her front wheel met the back wheel of the guy to her left. She lost the battle and went down hard. I talked to someone who saw her after the race and said she was in bad shape. I feel bad for her, hope she recovers quickly. I was actually thinking of her for the next few miles - that was the first wreck I've ever seen. That's why I always say "on your left" even if we're the only two people around. Around mile 3 I took a drink from my only water bottle, tried to put it back in it's cage and missed, damn no more water. Dehydration was going to set in soon. What would you do differently?: My time was okay, considering the amount of training I put into this race - an average 18.1 mph is pretty good. I need more training on the bike though. It's starting to turn out that swimming is my best leg - I was always worried that would be my worst. Transition 2
Comments: Not much to say here. Stopped, got off bike and ran to my area. Put on socks and shoes and went for the run What would you do differently?: One day, not now or in the near future - learn how to dismount with shoes still attached. Run
Comments: This was where it went all downhill for me, however it was a fun run, everyone was having a good time, laughing and chatting. Quite a few of the families that lived on the run course were out watching, their kids armed with a garden hose would spray you down if requested. I got ALL of them. There was even the "redneck team" wearing long wigs, hats and helmets on the run offering bloody mary's and tequila shots. I was tempted since my run was shot anyway but turned it down I wish I could blame this poor run performance on dehydration but I can't. I know that had something to do with it, but my lack of preparation was 90% to blame. What would you do differently?: train, train, train. Post race
Warm down: Drank a lot of water and Gatorade, then off to the beer tent for 2 mich ultra's. Two slices of cheese pizza and about 10 strawberries. What limited your ability to perform faster: In retrospect I realize that I was not really ready for this race at all. Really only got into real tri training about 3 months ago, next time I will do better. Event comments: Great race, I will be back next year for sure. Last updated: 2010-03-29 12:00 AM

Took an Epsom Salt bath the night before around 8pm to loosen muscles. Got out of bed around 4:25 and got some coffee. Troy picked me up and we headed to the race. No breakfast.
The walk to wave start was more than enough to loosen up the legs, it felt like a 3/4 mile walk. Watched Troy's wave take off (about 30 mins before mine). I then got in the water and loosened up the shoulders and swam a bit. I stayed in the water until they called us up to the waiting area. It was rather boring sitting there, but I didn't want to get out and my muscles get cold.
