Swim
Comments: I only managed to keep freestyle for less than half the swim and small bits afterwards. Swimming breast stroke slowed me down and got plenty of energy out of me once again. What would you do differently?: I should really try and stick to freestyle the whole way. I am sure I'd do better... Transition 1
Comments: I could have skipped putting the socks on. That would probably save me 30 seconds at least. The run to the transition could be faster, but my HR went up to 168. What would you do differently?: Skip the socks. I tried not wearing them after the race and had no issues. Bike
Comments: Averaged 43km/h on the way out, severely lower on the way back due to strong wind. Could probably push harder, but again, decided to be conservative after an exausting swim. What would you do differently?: Go a little harder and probably save a couple of minutes. Transition 2
Comments: Hard to make it any faster. Run
Comments: I could have gone faster, I realized that after the first 3km, but once again I was afraid to bonk. Never got close to that and finished really strong after a final km under 4 minutes. What would you do differently?: Up the pace to do a 21 minute run. Certainly within my capability. Post race
Warm down: After catching my breath after the final sprint, I stretched and relaxed for a good while. Hydrated well and ate a cereals bar. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough sleep, too much drinking the night before, and the lack of confidence that despite it all I still had enough to go faster and harder. Event comments: Once again the Jebel Ali Resort hosted a great race. I am happy to see that despite a foolish night preceeding the race I still managed to improve my time on this course by 8m29s compared to the race in April 14th. Last updated: 2005-12-26 12:00 AM

Got up two hours prior to the race, after sleeping no more than three hours following a night partying and drinking with friends to the point I'd given up going to the race in the first place. Breakfast was the usual milk shake and a good expresso, and 500ml of water during the drive. Drove 20 kilometers to the race site and checked-in one hour before. Setup transition zone and racked bike. Drank 250 ml of water and had a gel although I did not feel like I really needed it just 20 min before the start.
Short sprints, stretches and 5 minutes swim.
