Swim
Comments: I felt ok during the start of the swim but within the first 100 yds I just had to puke. I started to cough and it just came out. Started to swim and then I puked again while in mid stroke and swallowed some of it mixed with some nice salt water. Not pleasant at all. I thought about stopping because I wasn't sure if the puking was going to stop and I felt bad for the people behind me. I decided to give it a go one more time and if I puked again I would stop.. I got into a groove and was fine the rest of the way and actually enjoyed the rest of the swim. BTW, this was not only 440 yds, my time was around the same time i had in my last sprint and it was 880ish yds, the puking maybe delayed me a minute or two but not doubling my time. Per 100yds this is my worse time ever including my first open water swim/race and that was 880yds, that race I had a panic attack and swam 50% on my back. The elite's best time was 9:34 (he was also the overall winner) and usually that's their time for 880 as well. The word at the race was that the buoys weren't anchored properly and the swimmers were chasing them around. For anyone who swam in my puke, sorry! What would you do differently?: Not travel to Asia before a race. Transition 1
Comments: Running out of the water I felt pretty good. I took a look at my time and couldn't believe it said 13 min and something.. Got to the bike I felt so dizzy. I couldn't focus. I tried to take of the wetsuit a few times and couldn't because I lost balance every time. I just knelt down and looked for my bag and found 2 gels and ate them and drank water. Felt much better, took off the suit and ran off with the bike. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure if the dizziness was due to the puking or something else.. Never felt that dizzy before. After sprint drills I usually feel a little light headed but nothing as bad as this. Bike
Comments: The course was flat but was in horrible condition. My aerobar extensions and water bottle cage came loose from all the vibration. It was non stop bumps with some major pot holes you really couldn't avoid. My arm came out of the rest a few times and I had to constantly re-adjust the aerobar extension, during the last lap I had some trouble shifting as well. I thought I might be dehydrated from the swim and tried to drink all my water. My legs felt a little crampy but overall ok, I didn't push it very hard. I thought my time was OK considering the condition of the roads. At the end of the race i noticed my right aerobar extension became 2 inches longer than the left. What would you do differently?: Not travel to Asia before a race Transition 2
Comments: my legs cramped a little. I forced myself to drink more before the start of the run. Not sure why my time was so bad. Run
Comments: Not a good run. I felt like puking again and got cramps in my hamstrings. Tried to run out the cramping but they seized-up. Had to stop a few times to stretch and punch-out the cramps. The local high school manned the aid stations. They had a ton of fun throwing water on people, the water felt great. What would you do differently?: again not travel thousands of miles a day before a race. Post race
Warm down: Talked to my old boss. Drank some water. The hot topic at the finish line was the swim. What limited your ability to perform faster: I thought I could handle the traveling before the race. Lack of sleep during the week and the traveling really threw my body for a loop. Event comments: this race has the potential to be a great race, it's fairly well run and the volunteers are pretty good. They need to figure out what happened during the swim and fix the road. Arrived back from my trip to Hong Kong and Singapore at 9:30 pm, got home at 11pm and went to bed by 12 and tried to sleep but didn't. Got out of bed by 4. Ate peanut butter toast, drank nuun and coffee. My friend Scott met me at my car at 5:30am. Got lost, my windshield got smashed by a flying piece of cement on the highway in Brooklyn got lost again (i'm also bad with directions).. Finally made it to the race site. Setup and was hungry again (dinner time in Asia). My body was completely confused. Not a good start to race day.. One bright spot, I saw my old boss that I haven't seen in 5 yrs in transition. He looked great, he must have lost at least 50lbs.
Walked to the start of the swim and swam a few mins. Felt extremely tired.
