![]() Swim
Comments: I decided not to wear a wetsuit as I haven't had much luck with comfort during the swim. The water was warm and I waded in and waited for the horn. Everyone seemed to go far right or left so I decided to stick to the middle. The horn went off and I waited a bit and then started swimming. I was really thirsty and despite the dirt, seaweed and god knows what - I took little sips as needed. Yup! It's gross but I did it! I'm a little surprised at my overall time on this swim. I felt great. Had to slow a bit when people started bunching up but I sighted well and really focused on a strong stroke and keeping my legs from sinking. I got a little lazy in the middle but went strong on the finish line. I really thought I was swimming a 2:20 at most. Still - did much better than last year's swim of 2:43 per 100m. What would you do differently?: Drink more BOTTLED water before the race!! ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Woo hoo! No wetsuit = fastest T1 time EVER! What would you do differently?: Nothing ![]() Bike
Comments: I LOVE riding in this area. So beautiful! Definitely more hilly than last year and it felt like we were always going in to the wind. I felt strong and was going at a good clip for a while. I like the fact I was able to pass people going up hill (even if they passed me later on the down/flats). I ran out of liquids at 20km. Yikes! Around 26km I was fading when Anne sped past. Just the motivation I needed to pick up the pace and bring it home! Funny that Welland was flat vs. hilly like this race and yet my speed is the EXACT same.?! Last year took me 1:09:51 so still making progress (although course was different so...). What would you do differently?: Bring another water bottle. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Swapped shoes and took off. Looking forward to the first water station!! What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Run
Comments: Couldn't wait to get to the water station. I drank at all the stations! Kept a steady training pace. I have been having some tightness in my achillies and didn't want to hurt myself. Could feel the left foot acting up during the last mile. Once I hit the dam on the way back I started to pick up the pace - challenged myself a bit. Just as I was getting close to the finish line this girl I'd passed only seconds earlier flew past me. I guess I don't understand race strategy - why let me pass in the first place if you are going to blast past me seconds before the finish line?? Was great to see Anne cheering for me!! Thanks for the encouragement! What would you do differently?: Run faster! Last year I did this in 45:20 so slowly getting faster. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Chatted a bit with Anne. Grabbed some free snacks and then headed back to the hotel to see the family. Soaked in the hot tub :) What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to pay more attention to staying hydrated. Event comments: This was my second year doing the race and I think it's a good one. Very well organized and friendly volunteers. Last updated: 2010-03-31 12:00 AM

I decided to leave the family at the hotel and let them sleep in. I was up early and for the first time EVER I arrived at a race early! Had my breaky, got a good space in transition, went pee about a 100 times - soaked up the sun.
I didn't wear a sweater or jacket and when I stepped out of the car it was a chilly 17 degrees. I started to regret my decision to not wear a wetsuit but then walked down to the water, dipped my toe in and it was deliciously warm. Decided not to do a warm up swim and just waited for the race to start. As I was standing on the ramp waiting I realized I hadn't drank enough water - was feeling really parched. Then Anne (Latestarter) introduced herself - truth be told - I really wanted to grab her water and guzzle it ;)
