Pre-race routine:

Got up really early.... about 3:30 with the Dayling Savings time change that would make it 2:30 according to my body. I had to get up early because I didn't preregister and according to the Lake Charles Triathletes web page there was only 25 spots left. I wanted to be one of the first ones at the registration table and I was :)

Drank and ate very little as I had eaten big the night before.

The truck was already packed so I jumped in and went.
Event warmup:

My pre-race warm up was basically a quarter mile jog. This was kind of a test to see where my legs were. I have been sick all week and my legs just were fatigueing quickly. Well the legs got just at tired, just as fast. So I decided to change this into a rehersal race since I just got my wet suit and have never swam in it. My "A" race is MiM and I need the practice.
Swim
  • 06m 53s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

I am glad I had a wet suit. The water was cold enough to make your breathing labored but tolerable. Not like Meat Pie where the water actually caused me pain.

I felt my form was terrible. I am not used to this wetsuit yet.

My goggles fogged up because I forgot to lick the insides. Made my navigation harder as I had to stop swimming to look out the periphery of my goggles but nothing major to over come.

There was a slight current in my favor. That was a nice surprise.
What would you do differently?:

Being a new suit I will work on just getting used to it.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The transition counts into the bike legg....which I hate but that's the way it is.

For some insane reason I started putting on my running shoes in T1. I'm not sure why but lets chalk it up to me being sick.
What would you do differently?:

Put the proper shoes on?
Bike
  • 34m 16s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Okay, got on the bike and my legs began to fatigue quickly. I kind of got made and decided to just push as much as I could. One of my goals is to average 20mph on the bike on any race. Well this was only 10 miles and where was a chance I could pull this off.

I was pleasantly suprised to see my speeds at 21-22 on the way out. Legs were tired after mile 1 but I was encouraged by the speed.

Turns out I had a slight tail wind on the way out. On the way back I was keeping 18-19mph even with the head winds. I just may make my 20mph average goal!

What would you do differently?:

Give my current health status I think I did pretty good. I'm calling this a "good" bike because the speeds may not reflect it but I did push even though my legs were like lead.

Despite what the race results say my computer on my bike says I averaged 19.55 mph which is very encouraging. At 100% health I could have done 20 easily.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Running shoes on and I was out of transition very quickly.
Run
  • 00m
  • 2 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really strong out of T2. If I could have kept that pace I would have moved up at least 3 spots in my age group. Kind of had the heavy leg problem after a half of a mile but finished strongish.
What would you do differently?:

I did well considering my current health status. Calling it a "good" run because of the effort.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and drank some Powerade, ate some Oreo's.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick I would rate my health at 80% max of optimal. I have been resting most of the week trying to recooperate. I knew something was wrong on Tuesday when I couldn't finish my bike training.

Event comments:

The race went off without a hitch. It rained a little bit right before the swim start but the roads were dry. The bike course is about as straight as you will ever get and the roads are good.

The water was a little cold for the swim but the current was a nice surprise.

22 of the 100 contestants were in my age group. I did all my age group rankings by hand so I may be off but it can't be by much.

One bad thing about the wave starts.... I get passed alot more. Usually all the people who are faster than me I never see...but this way I see alot more of them.

Even being sick I managed to achieve one of my goals today.... Do it in under an hour and I comfortably did that...yeah me!
